Default Gear ratio for 37"s ?

Trying to decide which gears to use. I have a YJ on 37"s with the 4.0, AX15, 231. Most charts point to the 4.88 - 5.13.

Is that deep enough? How about when I move to a 400 SBC with 700/231?

Front HP60 and rear FF60 thinking of boring the spindles for 35 spline or moving to 14bolt.

I was running 4.88s in my waggy 44s on my 91 YJ with a 4.0/tf999/231 with 36" TSLs. They were good to go. i prob had some wiggle room to run 37s on that gearing too.

That's what I'm leaning toward but like the 60 clearance, not looking to buy bigger tires.

I just went through this decision process! Was looking at the dana 60 rear, dana 70, corp 14 bolt and the old HO72. The 14 is the clear cut winner. With a setup like that you may want to look at 5.13's or 5.38's.

Yeah, either ought to be ok for both setup. I've got a pair of axles with 5.13s which will be going into my scrambler, with 36s. I believe I ran the numbers to be about 2200 rpm or so in 4th gear @ 60mph for a 700R4. I'm going with a a TH350, though.

5.13 for the win!!!!!
Any higher numerical gear, and the pinion gets too small.
Wish I had them instad of my 4.88's.

Nope, he should stay with the 4.88's. He's only running 37's which are not quite 37" while you are running bigger. He's also planning on swapping in a SBC. 4.88's will be more than low enough............ ask me how I know.

Steve,
I'm currently running 4.88's. I never really have wanted for more power but I'm running a fair amount of HP. If you are truly planning on going to a SBC, I would go 4.88 even if you feel a little under powered now. On the other hand, if you are going to wait a long time, I would agree with Dale.

Great info guys - thanks also. I will be doing gears in a few months and was trying to decide between 4:88 & 5:13 also. 5:13's it is as there is no SBC in my future, just my little 4.0

Jim - currently i'm running the stock 242 and so far so good. Not planning on changing unless I have problems. I am looking at gears when the D60 goes in the front in a few months. Finishing the roll cage first, then gears.
