Talking ?'s about Samis/Trackers, OWNERS please comment!

Interested in getting one of these, been reading a ton about them and all of the parts available for them.

I have a few questions:

Are they just as capable as a full-size rig, or one of those four-letter genres?
How fast do they go (when decked out and modded to support, say, 32-33" tires)?
Do they have sufficient torque available to go up any terrain?
After building yours up, and considering all of the time and money put in: If you were to do it all over again, would you still do it? Would you do something bigger?

My first samurai had 32" mud terrains, lockers front and rear, power steering, t-case gears, spring over axle lift, cross over steering, rear springs up front, missing link shackles, etc. I had no trouble following any of buddies with cherokees and wranglers on 33-35" tires and lockers. It was my daily driver, it was not fast by any means but it was drivable on the street. If I was to build a small 4x4 like that again I would build a Tracker. Even though they have IFS, they all ready have the larger 1.6l motor, fuel injection, power steering, and linked rear suspension. A small lift with 31" tires on a tracker would be a fun little rig that you drive everyday.

I think a 99 up 2 door tracker with a 2.0, a little lift with some 31s would be a cool dd/ww.i just drove my freinds 99 4 door well i built a motor for my jeep and it runs way better then the 1.6. There pretty bullet proof, ive had several older ones,beat the s#*t out of them.they are light and go everywhere except deep mud,only cuzz of cuzin clearence.
If ya do get stuck a quad can pull ya out and when someone else gets stuck they dont expect you to pull them out.

I like my tracker, its basically stock 1995 1.6 16v. It would not be any good on the expressway with larger tires. as is 65 is kinda the safe speed for my auto without overdrive. Its a really fun ride, and they can be found for way less cost than a "real" 4x4. try to get a stick or an auto with od. I second the 99+ comment.

i went from a sami to a cherokee,back to a sami and now i just finished my tracker..truth is a sami can go alot of places most _eeps can go depending on how much u want to beat on them.my cherokee was lifted and had aggressive tires on it and i went very well with now problems.samurai was locked front and and rear with 4to1 tcase gears and i could go anywhere a _eep could go where tires size and engine power wasnt a issue..my recent tracker is spooled in the rear,running 33 inch tires that are as wide as i could find,cut the wheel wells to fit tires,put 5.12 gears into it and its a automatic.have a suspension and body lift also.at dog party 2011 (winter) i went EVERYWHERE my buddys _eep went.he has a 2001 tj,stock everything with a 4.0 manual trans. and running 35 inch tires with a limited slip rear end with a 4 inch suspension lift...he has close to $15000 into his,i have a little over $3500 into mine including my full exo cage that cost ove a grand alone....so,if u want a cheap wheeler,go tracker or samurai and beat the dog doo doo out of it and walk away at the end of the day..if u want to go get ice cream,go offroad,make it to car shows,go for a _eep.every _eep owner i know including good friends worry about trail rash(aka michigan pinstripe) because the put so much money into them for glamor..my whole family have samurais and trackers as well as majority of team kamikaze 4x4.we just like to show the _eep fellas that u dont need to spend thousands of dollars to look badass and wheel ok.we spend little money and look badass and wheel everywhere......hope that helps....

a friend of mine had a samy with 35s....and about 8 inches of lift with drop shackles and a locker in the rear....he ended up putting in a tracker motor...
it would go anywhere a jeep would go ...and probly more places as the turning radius was wicked tight and it was shorter and narrower

Tracker would be my choice, but for good offroad ability get one with a stick tranny. We have 2, one stick and one automatic. They both do things you would never think they could but the stick runs circles around the auto. Simply due to gear range difference. If you go to an auto regear the transfer case. I sold my fullsize rig to build a tracker because I was tired of my son running circles around my rig with his semistock tracker. And trust me we have tried to destroy this thing.....and can't. We ran his on a motorcross track and cleared doubles with it with NO damage to the suspension or frame. After that it became his wheeler and now has been modified but is still stock drivetrain and works great. Keep in mind it had 230,000 miles on it when I got it 2 years ago.

Trakers will cost more to buy and build than A Samurai.
Trackers wont rust as bad as a Samurai.

I had a Samurai, it was great, went everywhere I pointed it and put alot of 'built' jeeps to shame.

The only real reason I dont have it now; Not enough room for the Family.

Simple Spring over axle, a good steering solution (not a Z-link), 4.16:1 gears in the T-case and a set of 31" tires and fozzy lock the rear axle will get you places that alot of Jeeps have problems with.
the key here is their light wieght. start replacing engine, axles and transmisions, you get stronger stuff, but add wieght fast.
With a samurai built like I mentioned above, wheeling will take on a bit more technicle aspect and less of a point it and mash the throtle down.

OH, and I have never seen a Samurai that was 'comfortable' as a DD, especially if your over 5'10" tall.
If you have to have a DD/WW, build a Tracker.
