dana 70 front axle.

so i have been working on this project for a couple of months and i figured i would start a thread here showing my progress.

while not as cool as camccardell and his 10.25 front axle, this should be just as beefy.

it all started with the purchase of a dana 61 from a late 80s dodge pickup that i picked up from Chop.

this had all the parts i needed like the shafts, inner C's, and complete outers. and i was willing to cut up the housing and scrap the craptastic 61 pumpkin with it's awesome 3.07 gears.

so, after a couple of sawzall blades i got the 61 housing cut up.

good tubes and inner C's

junk 61 pumpkin

so, now the second axle needed was the 70. i went with a 70HD for its 4 in tubes and bigger carrier bearings. if you are going to build it, build it big.

so here it is. fresh from it's drive home.

yep, looks like a big 60.

and this is the mark on the casting you want to look for. as if the huge axle tubes weren't a dead give-away.

and after a couple more blades i got the spindles and hubs cut off the housing. once i cut the ends off you can see another reason for going with the 70hd. the inner diameter of the 70 hd tubes are the same as the outer of the 61 tubes. this way the tubes from the 61 can slip inside the 70 tubes and get welded up.

and here is how it sits now. i am ready to start trimming all the unneeded crap off the housing in preparation of cutting the short side to length and welding it up.

sitting next to the 14 bolt rear that will match it you can really see the beef of the housing and gears.

nice!

Drill some holes in the tubes of the 70. that way you can plug weld the 61 axle tubes for additional strength.

That thing is gonna weigh a ton!

You should have cut the 61 pumpkin so you could have retained the inner pieces of the axle tubes. Then you wouldn't have to make and inner axle sealing surface.

btw, I now own a lathe so maybe I help with making an inner sleeve so you can use stock inner seals.

What is the outside diameter of a d61? and the inside of a 70 for that matter?

What the pictures don't show is that he picked up the 70 driving a Jeep with no top. Hardcore.

i may have missed it, but do the 61 axles fit the 70 side gears? or are you going with custom shafts? cool build and great pics

i never thought about the plug welds. i will have to do that.

and yeah, i didn't think about cutting the housing up to save the seal surface until after i had cut the tubes. i am thinking of grinding out the plug welds now and hammering the tubes out to save the seals. otherwise i will make seal inserts out of the leftover long side 61 tube.

and i will let you know if i need the lathe work done. the OD of the 61 is 3 1/8.

and yeah, this is going to be a heavy beast. but i am also swapping in a 350 so it should have plenty of power.

yeah, i didn't put the pic up of the jeep. there is only a bikini top and the doors don't seal at all.

yeah, the side gears use the same 1.5 inch 35 spline shafts. i wanted to get away from needing custom shafts.

thanks. i figured i would have some fun and at the same time build up a near-bulletproof front axle.

i hope to get the axle tubes cleared of all junk junk and get the short side cut down this week while i am on spring break. the next set of pictures should show the whole axle together and ready for welding.
