Default Alright, diesel dudes got a question for ya

I bought a 1997 f250 diesel with 138,000 miles on it today. drove clear across MI to get it. My dad drove it on the way back while I followed. Every thing was fine till about 3 hours into our trip back it start making a hissing noise intermittently while cruising. It runs fine and acts normal except for the occasional hiss during cruising speed and when he put the pedal down it doesn't seems to have the spunk it had. What could it be ?

Going by what my dad said, he said it did it when cruising. I took it to mean coasting down the road not on the throttle. He said it felt and heard no difference in performance other than the hiss and lack of balls when pushed hard.

It could be the exhaust backpressure valve when it goes through a warm up cycle you will hear the hissing noise . I have an 02 and thats what it does granted 3 hrs into your trip it should have been good and warmed up but not saying a temp sensor may be going bad causing to to cycle once in awhile I have had mine cycle after it had been run for awhile and your right it has no balls because the exhaust is essentially blocked off . Something to look at .

sounds like exhaust backpressure valve (EBPV). mine did fucked up things like that too sometimes when I'm not using lots of boost. a couple things can cause the issue.

1. corroded/carbon plugged line (from the exhaust manifold to the EBPV sensor on front of engine somwhere) clean it out/replace the tube and/or sensor.

2. EBPV valve is sticking internally and needs to be fixed (remove turbo) or the oil seals in it are bad/weak.

that being said I don't know a ton about OBS powerstrokes, mine is a 00 and I have had this issue.

a boost leak would cause running issues and smoke.

look over on powerstroke.org, great site to browse and get info.

There seems to be quite a bit of people reporting that the EBPV will stick at times or not fully open. I installed a simple On/Off switch so I ave full control if its shut or closed. This also allows you to use it as a "jake brake".
