how long can you legally drive a car after purchase without a plate?

just bought a 07 mustang yesterday, I thought it was only legal to drive it home without a license plate.. but the guy i bought if from was telling me that i can legally drive it for 72 hours without a license plate. -as long as i have the car insured, which i do.
Anyone ever hear of this before?

drive it home in a direct route..

i belive is how that is stated.. so basicly drive it home and get it plated.. it's not worth a ticket to find out. if in doubt, call the sos office and ask.

I'm pretty sure you can drive it for a week before you have to get plates. I wouldn't worry about

I know you can drive it home; in fact it is a no no to throw a plate on it. I would think you could drive it from home to the secretary of state; I would not try to drive it anywhere else.
Your best bet would be to park it till you get it legal.
since it is a mustang and it is winter, I would just park it till april.

From SOS website;
You do not need a license plate to drive a newly purchased vehicle directly home. Never use a plate from another vehicle as a substitute

i bought my blazer that i'm selling in october. trailered it home. the next day i fixed the trans issue and just went down the street to test it out and got pulled over almost impounded it and gave me a ticket for unregistered motor vehicle on roadway, no insurance, no ops on person. The guy said he took it easy on me Cost me over $400 after getting them all dropped to double parking so no points but its not worth the risk

3 days from purchase date, direct route home. DO NOT throw another plate on it, been through that with a cop before, he was not happy.

Directly home, no exceptions. The SoS has a few locations open on Sat in the Flint/Detroit area, check their web for locations. I think they call them Supercenters

I'm picking up a Jeep Laredo in Minneapolis in a couple weeks. Would directly home be through the U.P. or through Chicago, or do I need to wait until the ferry starts running again?

I would say whatever route you take and are heading towards home is fine. Id be prepared with insurance and signed title, possibly bill of sale aswell just to keep everyone happy if you do get stopped.

Though you must title your vehicle within 15 days of purchase, there is no time limit on registering your car. If, however, you just moved to the state, you must immediately register your vehicle.

The person I'm selling my vehicle to is asking that I leave my plate on it so he can drive it home. Should I do this?

Answer:
No - immediately remove your plate upon selling the vehicle. You can transfer the plate to another vehicle you own or purchase. Do not let a buyer "borrow" your plate, as any violations (including parking tickets) issued to the buyer with your plate on the vehicle will be your responsibility.

Under Michigan law, a person who buys a vehicle through a private sale may drive the vehicle home using the most direct route without a license plate. The buyer must do so within three days of purchase and carry the assigned title during transit.

I would check with Minnesota about driving plateless, along with any other state you may pass through. I had to get a temp plate in Ohio when I bought a car there.

Dual dune flags, one front, one back = legal in 49 states. Alabama is the exception. They require three dune flags; one front, one rear and one in the driver's hand out the open driver's side window.
