Default Interim Jeep daily driver ($1200 or less)

We have a compression/cylinder head issues (2 cylinders) with a 2005 Liberty with only 115K miles (teh suckness!). Instead of having a knee-jerk reaction and paying the dealership $2200 to machine the heads, I wanted to see what was out there for an interim daily driver while we figure out a plan for the Liberty repair or replacement. Looking at Jeeps only at this point...likely a Cherokee at this price point.

Interested in something in the Grand Rapids area, unless it's someone I know on the East side (in which case traveling may be an option).

What do you have?

Craig

Hi Craig,
Just ran into the same thing with buddies, only he lost oil pressure and you can guess the rest. Dealer wanted big bucks. We ended up picking up a motor at the junkyard, I mean recycle center for 750.00. Had 80k on it an looked maintained. He has put about 30k on it with no issues. Had a weekend into the swap and I think he got something back for the old motor. Just a thought, good luck.

Pull the valve covers & make sure the cam followers didn't fall out. I don't know for sure if it happens on the 3.7, but I have seen it on the 4.7 V8, which the 3.7 is based on. Cam followers are sort of like a rocker arm, they have a roller that rides on the cam and they push the valve open. When they fall out, the valve doesn't open, so no compression. You might get away with just compressing the valve spring and sneaking them back in place.

Thanks for the input, guys. Those are the kinds of things we want to consider checking into, but would need a daily-driver in the meantime.

Nobody? (Actually, I did receive one PM, and am looking into that.)

While she trusts me fully, Amy would beat me if I took the wrenches to her less-than-24-hour-old JK. (but yes, it would be cool )
