Default High mileage V10 What to watch out for

I'm looking at picking up another excursion, but it has high miles... about 290k. Anyone have any experience with the V10 and high mileage? It's a one owner truck, and the entire drive train is still original. Original trans, has not been rebuilt. I'm going to ask about the front end, unit bearings, ball joints and such. Anything else to check on? This would be my daily driver, and I'm guessing I would put on about 5000 miles a year.

I'm really curious how long the engine will last. I would love to do a cummins swap, but that's not realistic anytime in the near future.

Any input? Bad Idea? It's cheap enough that a motor swap down the road might still be worth it, but I don't have the time or money right now. I just want to make sure it will last a couple more years....

IF it was well maintained I wouldn't be scared of it at all... like I said, "IF"

We have a fleet of E250/350 vans with V10's that we service regularly that are all above 300k and they see trips back and forth to Kentucky weekly. I wouldn't hesitate driving one anywhere, but they get serviced religiously. Same goes for my 02 5.4...

It it's a one owner and they have maintenance records it could be a good buy...

I dont know the problems V10 trucks have, but I do know that motor seems to be able to live for quite some time.

i would ask him the last time the plugs were changed. If he doesn't know or says they have never been changed, there is a good chance you'll never be able to get them out.

I myself don't mind high mileage trucks, even fleet vehicles. Usually if the truck has high miles it means they were running long distances (far from home) which means if the truck had problems the owner was out a lot of time and money. Sometimes I think a good high mileage fleet truck will outlast a lot of privately owned trucks that only run for 10 miles at a time.

i have changed 3 v10s. they are a pain in the ass to work on. the intakes need to come off to get them out of the truck. it would be a nightmare to do in a truck. i was lucky enough to do them in a motor home so the dog house could come out and was a major help working on it from the rear as well. the coils are a pain to get to on the back side of the motor. i also think the exhaust had issues as well on them if i remember correctly. we went through 3 motors before we got a good one from a yard. they are big heavy monsters.

im sure nuggets while chime in here if he see's this. he did more research on them then i did. how ever i got good enough to have one in and out in 12 hours from start to finish with bumper reinstalled and all.

I have no personal experience with them, but I was told by a ford dealer that they have no cam bearings and are a press fit? So if they where out they are junk. I have no idea if that is true or not. He also said once they hit 100,000 miles you should run synthetic oil in them to help with the wear. Like i said just what i was told.

There is one guy I know that has had alot of issues with minor leaks coming from the power steering. Last time I talked to him he was having the engine replaced due to ehither he said the timing chains or the tensioners for the timing chains.

It is an F250: V10, 2xx,xxx miles, 4x4 extended cab(should have about the same weight and wheel base as the SUV your looking at)

Oh and its green

i just bought a v10 excursion with 120000 on it and i love it.i did some research and the 99 v10 had issues,(my buddy has one in his f250 and he replaced with newer one.) the later ones were better motors.i have seen many with 300000 or more on them.the exsaust manifolds are known to crack,so check that. like bones said the the plugs and coil packs are issues sometimes also.

I missed out.... When I called, he said it had pulled out of his driveway 5 minutes prior. I'll keep looking. Thanks for all the input.
