Default Rear Ford 8.8

Just gauging interest before I head up to school. Anyone got a rear 8.8 out of an exploder or something similar in width? Need one with an open diff and disc if possible.

Yeah, the open ones are much harder to find. Well, at least hard to find cheap enough and in good enough condition for me to justify the risk of buying it.

I have one with 4.10s, discs and an open diff for $350, and should be able to get one with 3.73 and an open diff for $300. Can probably get it to the Pig Gig, SproMart or the GR/Sivler lake area in the few weeks

Yeah, make sure you fully inspect it before you lay down any money. Couple weeks back I swung by a junkyard that had a good price on what was claimed to be a 33k/open and I wasted about an hour there trying to locate the vehicle (turned out it was crushed) and then the axle (they had 100s in their racks and in no particular order), only to find out that there were no brakes what so ever included and the axle did NOT look like it was low mileage. Must have been on a snow plow Explorer. $150 is an excellent price if it's all there and in decent shape. Might be a great find!

If anyone is interested I had a place that had brand new I mean 0 miles 4.10 open Explorer 8.8's and of course the only downfall was the calipers were gone but the rest was there. they wanted $250 a piece for them and I think they had like 8 of them. It has been a while since I talked to them but I am 90% sure they still have them. I was thinking of getting one for my YJ and putting limited in it since all 8.8 31 spline LSD carriers are the same size. If you are interested let me know and I can shoot you the place. They had one 4.10 LS 8.8 but it wasn't in all that great a shape but the opens were surplus hence the 0 miles.

pm'd you back and I just called them and they have 3 or 4 left. I thought they were all 4.10's but he couldn't confirm over the phone without looking at them I am sure they were mostly 4.10's but not 100% on that they did have 4.10's when I looked at them, and yes they were 0 miles right form their mouths so I am just repeating what he told me! I have no way to confirm that but they looked it, at least when I looked at them.

Check this out I know 3.73's but still $45 for an entire axle (and yes it was the entire axle) The backers are bent but depending on how much they could be bent back or if you are good with metal you could cut up some new ones.

Sorry Link didn't work so here is the JPG of the page:

yeah, too bad there's no real market for the shafts (cause breakage is super rare) or the 3.73 gears (cause they're pretty darn rare in Jeeps so it's hard to find a matching front axle).
I called and, no, brakes are not included with any of their axles. Suddenly a good price just got a bit worse. I'd very much like to see the insides of the axles though. If they've never had lube in them, there's the chance for water to intrude and rust to form. Not cool!

yeah unfortunately calipers for most yards are sold off as cores. I haven't found a yard yet that leaves them on but I haven't hit them all yet! LOL! But regardless for an axle with 0 miles on it I would still pick one up but $ prevents it right now. That and I would only take a 4.10 with LSD. The rotors are there I do know that, the calipers are the only thing missing. Just thought I would pass along what I found.

The guys with the 2.8L Cherokees would have more luck having a 3.73 front axle to match. I had one for my MJ but I never got the matching rear cause I never finished my 4wd swap on it when I sold it. The front was out of an 86 XJ with 2.8 and auto so they aren't that hard to find the only downfall is the cv shafts in them but you can swap in regular u-joint shafts with no issues.

Shift's 94 XJ 4.0 has 3.73's. The 5-speeds are what you want to look for.

Koz's ZJ that he has been beating the piss out of has a D30 with CV shafts. He breaks the shafts, and not the CV joints.

Core charge? How can you have a core charge on something that was brand new as they claim? I was told they bought them surplus. I think something is funny with that. I would talk to one of the other guys there. They never said anyting about a core charge when I talked to them. If that is the case then I don't know if that ends up being such a good deal. They will dicker on price as well they did for the 4.10 I bought there before. Oh well just passing on what I found out.
