Might want to look into the kdp a little more. It has happened on 5.9's up to 2002. http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/Dowel_Pin/bolt.htm

with 500+ at the rear wheels (all stock internals and stock turbo), it'll be easy to get the EGTs out of control. I tow a 32' GN with a camper and my rig. incl d-max, I weigh in around 22,500#

around here in the flatlands, you can easily tow with hotter tunes, but no way I would want to do that when going out west. those grades on the way to Moab are tough and my tow tune was perfect for them.

figured I would give you some real world info, just not sure if the cummins is that much different than the d-max when adding power and EGTs

the aftermarket turbo would help quite a bit with the EGTs though

Gotta remember that your duramax is a v8 and the cummins is a i6. That pry makes a difference (I would assume it does anyway).

the kdp wasnt as common on the 24v as it was on the 12v. yes it does happen but not near as bad as the 12v. the 24v owners got shafted with the vp44 how ever though. any of these trucks are good trucks. they all have a few things to look for though.

KDP is a big deal. Fix it and forget about it. But it is not just a 12v problem.
I know three guys with 53 blocks and 2 of the 3 are cracked and waiting replacement. To me it is not worth the risk. I know you know way more than me about diesels cause i have never been around them ( heavy sarcasm ). 12v= simple to swap. 24v's are great motors and i would take one in a heart beat. My point is if you are going to buy one to swap in why not buy one that is known to not crack? It is not a pissing match or anything like that. It is my opinion.

yep, hence my disclaimer I have no experience with the cummins so I don't know if they run the same type of EGTs with similar power. just trying to help with some info

I have a vp44 24v, stock turbo, injectors, edge comp, and now an air dog lift pump setup. 311 rwhp, on a setting where the temps are below 1200 deg F. So no issues with towing... if I turn up the edge, temps get hot quick, even without towing. Not high power compared to what you can do, but suits me fine and I never have to worry. Oh, lots of smoke with the edge turned up, too.

IMHO, If you're looking for big power, go with a 5.9 common rail 24v (03 to 06). Between my brother and I, we've done 4 vp44 replacements, easy to do, but expensive. It's also a PIA to load a dead 7000 lb truck onto a trailer with a come-a-long (winch now installed).

my welding rig is a 2001 3500 cummins with 150 over sticks a s-400 turbo, edge w/attitude and a smarty double stacked, hot rod vp44, with a raptor 165 feeding fuel, my 5th wheel was a 40 footer and the truck fully loaded with fuel and welder w/tools is around 10000. have been 1 end of the country to the other and pulled hard to make it to many jobs. south bend is my clutch (double of course) nv4500 tranny, all with a 053 block, yes she runs damn good, no she hasnt let me down yet but hey its only got 258000 miles on it also, as far as high egt's well dont be cheap spend money on a properly sized turbo, yeah i had a cr and a duraloaf they were ok, but i doubt you will ever get me to own another auto, by the way for your 7.3 just go with a garrett ball-bearing you dont need any more, ohhh power numbers mine only puts down 570 hp but 1120trq not to bad for a old worn out come apart cummins
