I have never been to silver lake before, but right now Im trying to set a trip up for labor day weekend. guys I work with have been telling me some horror stories saying that it will be so busy that I wont be able to get in there to ride?? I live 250 miles away, so to get up there and be turned down would not be fun.

not necessarily. when are you planning on being here? if you are gonna be here on friday you can get vouchers for the whole weekend if you want to go up during the day. after 7pm you dont need a voucher and you can get right on, they dont close the dunes until 930pm.

now if you dont have a voucher, but still want to go up during the day, just find someone in line and ask them to pull you in, (this is legal) 99 times out of 100 they will, unless they are major dicks. most jeepers (especially modified older ones) will help you out. if they are older dudes in brand new/fairly new stock jeeps, chances are those are the dicks. (you know the ones, they wont even waive to you in passing on the road)
other types of vehicles will help out to, it has just been my experience that most jeepers will help other jeepers out.

I might get slammed for this post, but these are just my observations...

My plans are to take the truck and haul it up there, and camp there or on some campgrounds around there. So what exactly is the best bet to get in there? Also what is the best (cheapest, closest) campgrounds near to the dunes?

Cheapest and almost the closest would be the state park, but if your hoping for a place to camp i'd start calling now to reserve. The campgrounds around there fill up fast for a holiday weekend

well, last I checked none were really cheap :tonka: , and they are all booked anyway. unless you can get in due to some cancellations. there is claybanks on the other side of stony lake, they might have room but that is about 20 minutes away. do you know anyone up here with a cabin or cottage? anyone already camping up here? this late in the game, that might be your best chance.

as far as getting into the dunes, all you can do is try to get a voucher. they might have some and might not, but if they are all gone, you should still be able to get someone to tow you in.

I called around a month ago, and they were all booked. Luckily I live close enough to just drive the jeep out there and dont need a trailer or anything. I was just wanting to camp, so that is why I called....oh well, cheaper just to sleep in my bed and then drive out there anyway.

edit: I did not call silver city, silver city II or val du, they might have room.

the best time is at noon on friday. that is when they open and you can get them for the whole weekend. other than that just pretty much whenever you get there.
good luck, and if you see me, stop me and say hi.

I have headers into purple horny side pipes with glass packs and Im worried if they are going to hassle me about it.

Well all you need is a State Park Sticker, and a O.R.V. Sticker. And the vouchers are free you just need one to get in the dunes they are good for 2 hour windows...

not sure what the parking lots are for but the others are:

9-11
11-1
1-3
3-5
5-7

And after 7 do not need one...

Look for me in my Black Bronco on 38's, and an silver and blue explorer on 38" boggers. 4BYFOURS accross winshields!!!!

Yes you do need a voucher.. the voucher system is kinda dumb but it has made it quicker toget in.. probably just because some people don't want to deal with it... They are just free vouchers to get in.. all they are is just a piece of paper with some times on it and they verify and stamp it then they let you in if you are in your time window or close to it.. the voucher center is just down the road from the dunes... it is real easy.. just need to know your license plate number and you are good...
