Default 2001 Dodge Diesel Injection Pump Question

hey all
My truck stopped running the other day and i am almost 100% sure that it is the injection pump. Will know for sure this coming weekend. It has a VP44 injection pump in it. Everything on the truck is stock except for an aftermarket lift pump and a programmer.

My question is: Do i just get another pump for it or is there better ones out there? I have seen some that are call high performance pumps. Are they better in the long run? I just want a high quality pump more then performance unless i can get a few more miles per gallon.
Thanks

put a fuel pressure guage in the truck as soon as you install the new pump. its a must have in these 24 valve trucks. the vp44 pumps arent that great. i run a hotrod vp44 in mine.

Ditto! Fuel pressure gauge is a must have, it can save you from the huge expense of another VP44 in the future.

well here is the deal. I had to put a new vp44 on it. I have a fuel pressure gauge. The problem i had was when i when to put the gauge on(about 6 months ago) I found out that my lift pump was not working. So i replaced that. I have no idea how long i was running without it. I guess that weakened the vp44 and it just died that other day.

That is how it usually works. When the lift pump goes, the vp gets no extra fuel to keep it cool. Your pump is not a bad pump, just needs fuel psi to keep it cool.
