This happened at bank one to me, I had a cell phone call, didn't grab my card, instead grabbed my phone.. Called the bank the next day, and found out they keep the card for 24 hours before shredding it

Not likely.... I used to work at a credit union and we didn't do temporary ATM cards nor did any other bank or credit union that we dealt with. Generally, the cards are all made by an outside contractor which is why you normally have about a 10 day wait to receive a new car.

At the place I worked, if our ATM at your card and it was a card from our institution, we kept the card for about a week to wait and see if you came looking for it. If it was a card from another institution, we destroyed it when we get them out of the machine in the mornings.

That's funny that they shred them when they empty the machine in the morning. The damn things have an "IF FOUND PLEASE CALL" on the back of them for christs sake. They are also the property of a lender and if another lender is shredding them, that's destruction of property technically.

As I understood it, the reason we shredded them was because no other financial institution would ever call another financial institution to ask for confiscated ATM cards back. And if a non-account holder comes in asking for their card back, we had no way to verify that the card is actually theirs.

As for the "IF FOUND PLEASE CALL" number on the back, if you actually call that number and report that you found the card, I would imagine the first thing the do to it is deactivate it and then probably tell you to destroy it or something.
