Default Chicago to Whitehall Michigan

This May I am going on a trip from chicago to whitehall michigan in Northern Michigan. Was woundering if their are any trails out there or on the way that I would beable to take a ride threw. New to the whole off-roading scene, but excited to get started. Nothing to crazy. I have a 1994 jeep grand Cherokee with a 3.5inch rough country suspension lift, and 32inch all-terain tires.
from:10800 South Albany Avenue, Chicago, IL
to:Owasippi Rd, Twin Lake, Muskegon, Michigan 49457 ( near whitehall michigan)

if anyone has any info on offroad tracks on the way or around the area I would really appriciate your help.

Contact the Baldwin Ranger District office and ask them to mail you a Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM). They are free and the office is very good on turn around time. There are a lot of trails in Blue Lake. HOWEVER, if they're not listed on the MVUM, they are either no longer legal or never were (a lot of trails on private property too - not legal without WRITTEN permission from the deed holder in your possession at the time you use the trail)

Baldwin Office: (231) 746-4631

Keep in mind that the NFS is in the process of grading and graveling their MVUM roads and berming, stumping or otherwise blocking off all the other trails, so I don't know how much fun you'll have or scenery will be left for viewing by that time. But if you keep to the MVUM you WILL be legal.

All the trails are west and north of Whitehall and plenty to be found. I have some listed at EveryTrail if you want to look at them.

Took a look at your site.

Hart-Montague is not legal for motorized vehicles, except snowmobiles.
Those you have labeled Whitehall east do not reflect the MVUM, cross private lands and one even runs on a gas pipeline - all illegal in Michigan.
Those you labeled as Whitehall Northeast again do not reflect the MVUM and even more worrisome than that, driving through streams is VERY illegal. Every map of yours I looked at showed illegal activity!

324.81133 Operation of ORV; prohibited acts.
Sec. 81133. A person shall not operate an ORV:

(i) In or upon the lands of another without the written consent of the owner, the owner's agent, or a lessee,
when required by part 731. The operator of the vehicle is liable for damage to private property, including, but
not limited to, damage to trees, shrubs, or growing crops, injury to other living creatures, or damage caused
through vehicle operation in a manner so as to create erosive or other ecological damage. The owner of the
private property may recover from the person responsible nominal damages of not less than the amount of
damage or injury. Failure to post private property or fence or otherwise enclose in a manner to exclude
intruders or of the private property owner or other authorized person to personally communicate against
trespass does not imply consent to ORV use.

(o) In or upon the waters of any stream, river, bog, wetland, swamp, marsh, or quagmire except over a
bridge, culvert, or similar structure.

324.81147 Violation of part as misdemeanor or civil violation; penalties.

(1) Except as otherwise provided in this part, a person who violates this part is guilty of a
misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for not more than 90 days or a fine of not less than $50.00 or more than $1,000.00, or both, for each violation.

(2) A person who violates section 81133(e) by operating an ORV in such a manner as to create an erosive condition or who violates section 81133(i) or (o) is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for not more than 90 days or a fine of not less than $250.00 or more than $1,000.00, or both, for each violation.

You have broken several laws and are now advertising that fact (with documentation) on a site that is frequented by the DNRE and Forest Service. I would suggest you educate yourself before an LEO gives you a more expensive education than you were expecting. That type of use is what gets trails closed to the rest of us.

BigMudder20, follow sdault's tracks and you too could spend up to 90 days in jail, $1000 in fines and have your vehicle impounded - not to mention attorney's fees and having a misdemeanor on your permanent record.

STICK TO THE MVUM!!!

Hart-Montague was a bike trip! Do you know how to read?

Whitehall east was before I read about illegal riding on gas line, should remove that part of the track. Did not cross any posted private land.

Whitehall Northeast trail did not cross the stream, picture was of the stream. Also have pictures of White River, impossible to cross.

Do not suggest illegal activities and most of these trips were before the MVUM map came out.

Not trying to scare anyone. My rig is stock and I stay on well worn trails. When at the Jeep Blessing (same question 2 years) I asked the Forest service how to tell legal trails. Their answer was stick to trails that show heavy use (sand or stone showing wear, not overgrown) and you should be OK. They do no ticket for simple mistakes and educate first. If you leave a trail to climb hills, play in mud, etc. it's a different story.

One other thing to note is some Forest roads end at county seasonal roads that are not shown on the MVUM maps. This makes it look like these Forest roads have no access.

This is where the VVMaping software comes in handy. It not only shows the MVUM it also shows couny roads so you can see where they connect.

One place to check out if you have time is Silver Lake. You will need a MI ORV and daily State Park sticker plus a flag. Here's a link to the site.
