That's because a 60 has quite a bit better ground clearance then a 14B. I wheeled mine for a bit unshaved, then shaved it and haven't regretted it for a second. And x2 on the pinion guard.

imo, it's necessary. I've seen way too many trashed ujoints at the pinion end and without spares, it'll end your day/trip.

beats possibly getting stuck.

Everyone I wheel with carries spare u-joints, axle shafts and drive shafts.

My truck looks like a parts department.

I never lost a shaft before the guard went on. But man did it make it hard to get the rubbed smooth and round bolts out when I needed to remove the shaft.

That's pretty much the reason for shaving it isn't it? Better clearance and to get rid of that bottom bolt. Seriously that is a question.......i'm fairly new to this so I ask. Out of all the people that run in my circle I don't think any run a guard. But......that was also part of why I moved to a 14 bolt from the 60. Got sick of breaking shafts. I broke 3 last yr before the 6.0 went in....been lucky so far this year, only spare I used went to Tom.

X2 or at least end up changing a u-joint or a drive shaft on the trail from something you thought you could go over

Becky, I run a guard that Benny made and it holds up awesome and I am glad that I have it. I think you just have to carry all of those extra parts because of sharing a rig

Nope, nothing I carry even fits Erins jeep, he has a few spares for mine tho(Until now with the new axle) and the only time somethings broke on mine was when I was driving.

Not adding a guard. Will be upgrading the joints soon tho......after the swap they will become the weak link.

Most of the time the tone ring is moved to the rear of the trans since the 300 won't work with it, this causes your speed to be multiplied by the reduction in your tcase, thus the reason for speed change. I low I'm its an old topic but I didn't see it explained was going to do this with my truck then decided computers are overated.

Shaving the diff and the guard we are refering to are different. The 14B is larger so it hangs down more then a 60. We shave them to try and get the same or close to the same ground clearance as what the 60 has.

The guard bolts on at the pinion. It protects the driveshaft to yoke area. Before I ran one, when in the rocks I would rub the driveshaf/yoke on the rocks directly causing damage to the bolts and straps that held the ujoint to the yoke. When they rubbed it disfigured the hex shape of the bolts making it very difficult to remove to service the ujoint. Some have gone as far as to damage the yoke itself or worse yet the pinion itself. The guard is there to take the abuse instead of the shaft/yoke/pinion taking it.

A 60 doesn't have the option like a 14B or 9" does for a guard.

she will not be getting a guard.seen them hook on things too much. butler bent his up so much it broke the u joint.i have been running a 14 bolt without a pinion guard for 5 years and never had a issue getting the bolts out to change a u joint.have seen the guards do more damage then good i think they are a waist of money.
i am going to have her get the crane 13 bolt kit.will cut it and shave it and add there cover.
should have the other air shock moved out today and the bumps made, will also put her new inner air lock limit straps on.
will have the axle in and maybe even get her the rear 2.5 air shocks before we go to harlen in 3 weeks. after these upgrades her rig is about done. will do some kind of hydro steering this winter put the fuel cell in and change the track bar on the front..that is all the upgrades she should have left.

That's because you don't rub on rocks, you fly over them .

The reason it broke the joint that day was I kept running the race/course in the comp to finish (Which I did) and I drove it onto the trailer with it rubbing . If that would have happened on the trail we could have just bent the guard down or taken it off. With out it, I would have taken out the driveshaft or joint at that time. I think its personal pref with or with out a guard.

The crane 13 bolt cover looks bad ass, will you have to cut the gear to run that much of a shave?
