I drove Jimmys with the Art Carr.....LOVE his jeep, hated the shifter.

so what's the diff between gates and ratchet?

edit*...i just looked at the winters and saw what the gates are, thats exactly what I disliked about the Art Carr.....was a pain in the ass IMO

i have had a couple of those and they were a pain in my ass being ratchet or locking in gear style.

a winters or art car gate shifter is around the same price and well worth it. now that i have had one i wont get any thing else.

Why would I be offended??? I own a Ford as well

Really not a fan of the gates, i'm sure I could get used to them, but after driving one with them for 1/2 hour I was agrivated to no end.

I had a light truck mega shifter in my bronco and it was great for what i did with it, but kinda bulky for a jeep. Why not just use your jeep shifter?

it is different at first but now it just feels natural. i dont even have to think about it and its quick. the cable on the shifter is heavy duty, at least 2 times the size of b/m or hurst.
the ratchet shifters have revers lock out that you need to go from rev. to nut. in order to get it into park and to get from low to rev. you will have to shift 3 to 4 times. it gets old really fast shifting so much.

Want something that leans back a little bit away from the dash, even with my little hands I rack my knuckles because the placement of the shifter sucks.
Did a little looking around, quite a few people saying the B&M shifters linkage doesn't line up well. Probably sticking with Lokar

get the lokar adjustable shifter.16" if you get one of the short rachet ones you will not be able to reach it without building some kind of raised mounting box. you need the long handle that lokar offers.the adjustable one you can move it to were it fit's you. jegs had it for 211.00 for the 4l80.i didn't look around but i am sure you can find it cheaper then that.

i didn't care for it eather.the winters looks nice but it has gates in it also.if mounted right on the floor she could never reach it. remember she is 4 foot() so she drives with the seat touching the stearing wheel.she will need a long lever for her to be able to shift fast if she wants to get out of a roll.

I'm not getting the long lever idea, if it's long it will be to high and back for where my seat needs to be. I reach my stock shifter fine, im thinking this shifter with the 10" http://www.jegs.com/i/Lokar/625/FMS6...oductId=751162

And that's 5' Erin!

hosejockey, I drove a jeep with the gates, not like I haven't tried them, I absolutely hated the gates. So, don't say i'm not listening, this was from my personal experience.

I have a Hurst shifter mounted directly between my seats so it's a natural location without having to lean to reach it. I modified my gates so I have a smooth motion between R-N-D. No clicky, lifting a trigger or anything. It's extreamly nice to be able to slam reverse from drive when things get hairy.

you need to sit in your jeep and measure from the floor up and see how long of a handle you need. i was thinking the adjustable 16" so you could mount it were it felt comfortable. but yes that might be too long of a handle.you need to measure it to be sure..this is a real important part to fit you perfect..

This would be the only way I would buy gated, to modify it. And after it was mentioned earlir, I agree, no levers or triggers to lift is better

jim is real old so you know he has to have something comfortable, since those bones of his don't move real fast.

The Art Carrs had some nice off-road gates for some models that allowed the shift from 1st to R without any gates.

I've not heard of anyone liking the Lokar for that style, there's nothing to let you shift to R to avoid a roll, without accidentally hitting some other gear.

Get one like the pro stick, and grind out the gates like everyone does. BillaVista has a big detailed article on it. I will set mine so that shoving all the way forward is reverse, shoving all the way forward when pulling the trigger is neutral.
