If I didn't get mine as a gift, I'd look into the Suunto - several of their heart monitors work with the PM3 computer on my erg.

I've had excellent luck with anything Garmin I've bought, and I've bought several.

I just bought one around 2 weeks ago, I absolutely love it!

I have been using it to train based on heart rate, I have been very happy with it.

Brian JCR just bought one and posted a few of his runs and it looks absolutly awesome. Have you check the price on Amazon? They are crazy cheap now.

Edit: haha, just saw he posted above. It will be my next purchase but the heart rate monitor I'm using now is getting the job done . . sure will be nice though!

This is great, when I first posted the question I knew I would get some smart ass comments. But once we filtered through them it's become an interesting chat.

If you have an iPhone (or Droid or Blackberry I believe) and use it to listen to music while you are running, I'd download the RunKeeper application and just use that if the GPS functionality is all you really want.

If you want the watch to also be able to provide you with your heart rate as well... I've had both a Suunto watch/heart rate monitor (t4c) and a Garmin Forerunner GPS/heart rate monitor and the Suunto wins hands down. It doesn't offer the GPS but has a lot more functionality in my opinion. The coaching features and programs that it suggests are great. They also make a pod that can go with it to also provide GPS feedback for your routes but I've learned that generally I'd rather have my iPhone and Suunto watch and no GPS pod than use my Garmin.

I paid $137 for my watch with free shipping from Amazon.

I like that plan. I can't run every day either (I'm old). I run Mon. Wed. and Fri. anywhere from 3 to 7 miles depending on how I feel. I'll get more serious around March training for the 25K River Bank Run in May.

That is definitely bad ass.

If I don't get one for Christmas I'll definitely have to buy one by Spring.

My uncle was a runner his whole life and said it's the worst thing he could have done because all his joints are shot and has had countless surgeries and is in constant pain. I'd rather walk! Or drive, it's easier.

How many of you run outside during the winter? This will be my first winter of running outside. I am not sure I can keep my mind together on 6+ mile runs on a tread mill.

I have been buying clothing and stuff to get ready for the cold, damn this is one expensive hobby.

Maybe he should have drank more milk.

If you run too much on concrete roads, that definitely becomes a problem. If you mix it up some and run on trails, grass, sand or dirt roads you should be able to avoid those problems a bit longer. In the long run though (pun intended) every body is different and how an individual lands on their heels or the balls of their feet, the types of shoes they where, how much they weigh, how fit they are in general, etc. will all make a big difference in how one's body will hold up. I remember reading a study from the physiology or kinesiology department from UCSD that talked about how a difference in your weight by as little as 3 pounds can make a huge difference for how much stress a person's knees and other joints endure during prolonged running.

I run outside in the winter, weather permitting. I don't mind the cold, I actually enjoy getting out and running when it's about 20° or so outside and I especially like running when it's snowing. In the winter and when there is piles of snow or ice on the ground though, I try to avoid roads without sidewalks or with very narrow shoulders because I just don't trust drivers during those conditions. I also stay off of the trails in the winter if we just had a bunch of snow and then it starts to melt but freezes again (if that makes any sense); it just gets too east to twist an ankle in those conditions.

I'm going to try. The difficulty for me is being able to do it when there is daylight.

That's pretty much a problem for anyone that works during the day! It's already getting dark at 5pm.

I am going to do more running near WMU campus or other well lit areas when it starts getting very dark at 5.

I run in the winter just like the Italian Stallion . . Rocky!! Sweat pants and a hoody with thermals underneath.
