They said it came off right at the beginning. Since hat race seemed to be all downhill, pedals were not needed.

His chain snapped as he was pedaling out of the gate.

You actually pedal a surprising amount in a DH race.

Neko Mulally (another American) lost a chain at the 2014 World Champs race and was able to pull off a 4th overall, another great chainless run.

It becomes pretty mental at that point, because you know if you make a mistake you can't make the time up by pedaling, so you have to hit your braking points perfectly and try to stay as smooth as you can so you don't lose momentum.
