Default Bull Gap near Mio: July 2-3

I'm going to be up in the northeast lower penninsula over Fourth of July weekend and was wondering if anyone else will be up that way that weekend, or if you know which trails are worth running and which aren't.

I will be near Devil's Lake Route, Brush Creek Route, Mio Loop, Old State House Route, etc. and we're going to be camping at Harrisville State Park. Are any of these any good?

Let me know if anyone's interested in meeting up if you're going to be in the area.

I too will be up that area. haha. and from what I know is there are some trails but they are for ORV's that are 50" and less wide. Which I not sure if that means its off limits to jeeps and what not. There is a place in Mio called Bo gap that is the "local" spot to go wheeln' , but I heard from a friend from Mio that it isn't all that its cracked up to be. Then again these are all the ones that I found, and doesn't mean that there aren't some non-government owned trails to go on.

All the trails you speak of are ORV trails and jeeps are not allowed on the 50" or less ones and any that are big enough are no fun. Just find some trails and have fun. Bull gap is fun for about 10 minutes.

Default Mio area

I like to go up to Mio, specifically the roads around Bull Gap.

Tower road, Evans road, 6-mile grade, all the little connecting roads. There are some decent trails in the area but you have to find them.

I take my GPS with me so I can find camp. If you are tenting it.....that is all federal land so you can camp anywhere.

Everytime I am up there hiking I see all kinds of jeeps and small trucks like blazers and GEO trackers running the roads. They are all sand and gravel in that area.

All of the trails i listed are designated as ORV routes on the DNR website, which should mean that they are open to "mixed traffic." There are also atv trails through there, but if it's called route then it should be open to us.

99grandtj and gorilla, let me know if you guys want to meet up to run some of these trails on the 2nd or 3rd.

Many of the trails I drive on up near Bull Gap have signs saying "Mixed traffic" and picture a 4-wheeler and a car.

There are some that make me nervous to drive on as they are pretty steep and sandy.

I have GPS coordinates for the general area I like to camp and drive if you want me to dig them up.

take CR602 East of Mio at the light with the Rite Aid pharmacy.

Go until it turns to gravel. FYI, you have just passed Bull Gap turnoff on the right....

stay on the gravel road until you reach 6-mile grade. Turn right and go to the groomed 2-track that turns off the right.

Should be right about here....

N44°37.288' W83°59.036'

Follow that trail up into the woods. You will like that trail.

At the top of the hill it veres to the left and dumps onto Evans road. Take a right and you have lots of sandy roads to zip around on.

Hey guys, I am going up to Oscoda for the long weekend, and we (my brother-in-law in the white cherokee/buggy and my self in my comanche pics on Mounds 6-10 picture post) were thinking about taking the truck and trailer with them up and trying that area, but we have not heard it is very good. Is it worth it? I do not have the whole time to wheel but one of those days would work. We have explored almost every trail around Oscoda, Harrisville, Tawas and have found a couple of spots about 10 miles apart. There is one road in Oscoda back country that is pretty much a swampy trail. Have never had enough Jeeps to try it. It's Tough. Well, let us know if you guys are planning anything. Also is there a place to park a truck and trailer? :dunie:

Having never been wheeling up there I cant answer as to your questions about the truck and trailer, but I believe there is a staging area for ATVs and motorcycles that you might be able to park at, see the link to the map posted below:

http://www.dnr.state.mi.us/spatialda...rv/bullgap.pdf

I am guessing that I'll probably only be wheeling on one of the days but would be willing to try more than one location as long as it's not too far from Harrisville. For instance, Mio and Oscoda are both fine. If we get out to Bull Gap and decide it sucks, I for one wouldnt be opposed to driving down to Oscoda to check out the area you're talking about.

you turn off of couty road 602 onto Bull Gap road and the first left is a HUGE parking lot. Plenty of room for trailers and such.

If you are coming up 33 there is a trail head area on the right between Rose City and Mio where you can also park and unload.

Cool, thanks for info. I mapquested Mio from our place in Oscoda, about an hour. I guess I will talk it over with my brother-in-law and I will let you guys know. I would be up for going to the trail I spoke of, if Bull Gap sucks, If we come. What day were you guys planning on running the trail?

Havent settled that yet, I was going to wait and see what the weekend's weather forecast was looking like. I'd rather go wheeling on whatever day isnt looking as nice, like if the forecast is cloudy and rainy.

you had better hope for rain or else it will be real dusty with the holiday crowd. the DNR will be out in force so make sure everything on your rig is ready for them.
I too have ridin the roads on the southern part of Bull Gap and they are fun on a quad. the signs heading up to and around Mac lake all say mixed traffic. so watch out for little guys.

My parents own a cabin in McKinley right by Mio, I was considering going up that weekend with the jeep and probably take the quad. Its only like 10 miles from bull gap.
Bull gap is only good for about 10 minutes anyway, as said before. There’s a few good hill climbs and narrow trials right at the hill that the DNR can’t bust you for riding. They’ll get you if you on a 4-wheeler trails with a jeep anywhere else though or on the road with a quad. There are also some nice trails but there few and far between up there, i havent found to many yet. Lots of flat sandy borring roads and a few mud pitted roads.
If I decide to go up that weekend I’ll let you know!
I know of one trail near an old lookout tower just west of bull gap (about 3 miles) that you might need a locker to climb out of.

The ORV trails that lead out of that staging area are mostly for bikes/four-wheelers from what i can remember. They are narrow a Jeep wouldn't fit through most of it.

the DNR is always in force there on holidays since the unfortunate events several years back. They check for noise and spark arrestors on the bikes and quads.

Lots of fun on bikes but I to agree it would get pretty boring in a Jeep. Probably be fun in a sand rail (if I had one).

Bull Gap Hill is clasified as a scramble area , I know its only about 60 acres. so I do not know what that 60 acres covers in trail. the rest of the system is devoted to 50" and less. so becareful where you go.
