Default A One-Two Punch to the Drummond ORV Route System

Folks, GLFWDA and the Drummond Island Off Road Club need your help!

We are in jeopardy of loosing the Drummond ORV Route System that was JUST designated this year. We need all of you to please help spread the work that WE MUST STAY ON THE DESIGNATED ROUTE SYSTEM!

Sometime on or around the weekend of September 18th and 19th some 4x4s drove sown a couple of the Island's ORV Trails smashing trees down and widening it out from its original 50" to 72". One trail in particular was a favorite of the ATV crowd because it was very tight for a quad. They are extremely unhappy that it is now ruined. The DIORC is now going to have to spend many, many man hours repairing it and thousands of dollars putting barriers up to keep 4x4s off the repaired trail.

Sometime shortly after that, C.O. Kyle Publiski caught a group of Jeeps from Ohio who had driven around the "No Motor Vehicles Beyond This Point" signs and the large boulders that were placed to block off access on Marble Head and were parked out on the top of the cliff. They were issued tickets.

Needless to say, the DNRE is now quite unhappy with the 4x4 crowd. Unhappy enough that we are starting to hear talk of closing the Route if we can't stop this type of behavior! WE MUST STOP THIS BEHAVIOR! Too many people put in too much work and too many of us REALLY enjoy the Drummond System to let a few uninformed or malicious miscreants screw it up for all of us!

Drummond is the FIRST ORV Route designated for the full-sized crowd. Because it is the first, it is being watched closely by the Department AND the greenies. If we want MORE Routes designated for us (and I know I do!), then we MUST prove to them both that we can follow the rules.

PLEASE PASS THE WORD AROUND:

THIS IS FOR VEHICLES LESS THAN 50" WIDE ONLY, NO 4x4s ALLOWED!

THIS IS FOR EVERYONE, INCLUDING FULL-SIZED 4x4s

If you see a "No Motor Vehicles Beyond This Point" sign, DON'T go past it! You just might cost ALL of us our access on the Island as well as ALL FUTURE 4x4 ROUTES that we might otherwise be able to get designated!

PLEASE help us save our driving privileges!

People who can't follow the rules should have their rigs burned to the ground.

Its just far too simple to understand signs, they do not deserve to be a part of this sport if they can't get the hint from "NO MOTOR VEHICLES BEYOND THE POINT."

pat, if you could, suggest they color code them differently. the signs are small and i think it would help alot for everyone if the "trails" and "routes" were more distinguishable

thanks for all the work you do too

It would really suck if we lost more on Drummond. People need to be educated and make good decisions.

The Department is actually in the process of approving new signage to help with this problem. The new signs will show each type of vehicle allowed on a path. It a picture of your type of vehicle isn't shown, you are not allowed. It might be a while until we see them on the trails though, so we still need to spread the word about the current signs.

Thanks!

I think your bigger problem lies with someone rebuilding his Jeep after he finishes it AGAIN....

Now, for my opinion:
There is a critical flaw with trying to keep ORV routes open on Drummond Isle: The Maxton Plains and its rare collection of Alvar.
While I know this has nothing to do with the incident listed by Trail Fanatic, it does have merit when you consider other reasons to get rid of the routes on the island.
Arguments of this type of intra-ORV disrespect & damage could go a long way toward other arguments to rid the island of ALL ORV use except the sleds.

My point is this - it is not only bad that this happened between ORV user groups on the island - it is a far worse showing of "OUR" lack of restraint and control as a user group.

Drummond Island offers a rare mix of ecology not found anywhere else in the world, here is an excellent read. The most important fact to take away from this: Preservation of this resource for all is MUCH MORE IMPORTANT than a bunch of rednecked, drunken-wheeling, loud hillbillies (the ignorant stereotype we get from the few assholes that are involved in this hobby). WE WILL LOSE IF WE CAN'T GET OUR SHIT TOGETHER.

I have no idea how to help rectify the current situation - short of going up to the island and helping restore the ATV trail.

I am open to suggestions on HOW TO HELP.

They ought to redo the small signs to specifically show a Jeep with a 'NO' slashed circle

It's understandable that some signage is hard to read; but it sucks that you can never stop the idiots from driving off the trail and tearing stuff up. Thank God it wasn't in Maxton this time.

Sticky for you.

"no motor vehicles beyond this point" shouldn't be that hard to understand.

The problem is that the type of people that do this will continue to do this no matter how much time and money is spent on education. We aren't going to stop it any more than we can stop shoplifting, jay walking, or any other violation of the law. As the saying goes, you can't stop stupid. The type of people that are open to being educated wouldn't have ripped down trees to begin with. I don't believe that we will ever stop it. Even if they do close down access to the entire island there will continue to be stupid. Stupid isn't illegal. So, even if the DNRE closes down the entire island, idiots will continue to wheel illegally and destroy things that shouldn't be destroyed. We still must continue to educate those that just don't realize it is wrong. It is the crowd that knows it is wrong already and just doesn't give a shit that is the problem. They believe it is their "right" to act that way. Us telling them to stop isn't going to affect them.

Agreed

There is no stopping stupid, its got to be nearly impossible to identify stupid unless stupid is caught in the act as well, so, I can't imagine that increasing the fines would be any help either.

The one thing that comes to mind is trail cams.
...stupid would probably steal them.
