Default are any 6.0 powerstrokes safe?

I've been told 04.5 and newer are safe, but then again I have also heard none of the 6.0's are worth a shit.

They are great engines besides the problem parts like the EGR and oil cooler.

Replace those with the aftermarket parts and work it.

Just from what I have read on the interweb.

Upgrade to 5.9 Cummins and be done with it. Chassis parts are cheaper than motor parts and easier to work on IMO.

i would never own anything before an 05. I made a lot of money working on them when I was working at the ford dealership.
The 05-up ones seem stout.

Personally I would say any 6.0 is a crap shoot,I just got done dumping over 4K in my late 04 with 135K on the odometer(Injectors,Hpop,Ipr,oil cooler,EGR delete,FICM)and I maintain it regularly. My brother just dumped his 05 because with just over 100K it already had injectors and EGR delete and a few other things.I have talked to some people that have had good luck with there 6.0s but more often than not they have troubles and they get shitty fuel economy. One of the local diesel shops was saying that he gets a 6.0 in almost everyday.

I've never really heard anything good about any 6.0. I worked in a shop where two of the guys were from a Ford dealership. It was a parade of 6.0s with multi-thousand dollar injector issues and other problems. I wouldn't risk it.

I have and earler 04 now has 115000 on it has had a lift at 300 mile and 35s chipped at 5000 with exaust and air intake. Has had Head gasket replaced, turbo cleaned once then replaced, electric fuel pump replaced, FICM (fuel injection control module) replaced, EGR cooler replaced, I know injecter are going to start going next by the people I've talked to. Not what advise to give I like my truck but I know cummings don't seem to have the problems with their motor (hope my buddies don't see this I defend my Ford). I like my 7.3 better the transmission with 6.0 made the motor seem like it made more power in my mind. Just my 2 sense.

Dodge trucks are ugly, mega cabs are uglier, and the quad cabs have a tiny back seat and a shitty interior.

I would like a cummins, but will drive a powerstroke or a duramax because I want to like the whole truck, not just the engine.

My dad has an '04 with 110k on it. Replaced the egr cooler 3 months ago, just got it back from the shop 2 weeks ago for headgaskets. It was randomly eating coolant.

He's meticulous, the truck has always been well cared for...but problematic.

You have to replace so much to get it reliable. Doesn't the complete cab need to be removed to properly get the EGR system up to snuff? Close to $10k in work.

I want a crew cab, I can't stand those backwards opening doors on the extended cabs.

the reason I brought this up is I have seen 2006 6.0's for 20,000 and 2001 7.3's for 20,000 and wondered if the issues had been worked out by 06.

The prices for these trucks is all over the map, but with enough patience and education I think I can find a decent deal somewhere. My car has to sell first, or I would prefer it to sell first, but I am in no rush to find one.

get a cummins outstanding motor reliability with an 'ok' wrapper. I didnt buy a dodge, I bought a cummins.....thats how you have to look at it.

when it comes to low end and shear brute force there is nothing like a inline 6.....both the strokes and dmax's make their best power around 2600-2800 rpm, cummins is right around 1600 - 1800.
there is a reason big rigs all have inline 6's for the most part....my $.02, good luck in the hunt though!

No, but a sales guy at a ford dealership once told me "Ford owns cummens".

PS I held back from saying get a cummins till you wrote this remark.
