Manual valve bodies are much more predictable. I don't think I would have a manual with out one.

I bought a Hurst V-matic ratchet shifter with the intentions of being able to upshift as I wanted. I found while bouncing around it's very hard to hit the shift points just right. It's much easier to let the trans do it. Same for downshifting. I can pull it down if I want but I find that when I roll up to something and want it to downshift, just standing on the throttle & letting the trans perform the way it's designed seems to work well. About the only time I intentionally pull it down into first is for compression braking while on a steep descent.
I like our MVB. We have a Winters shifter and haven't cut the gates on our shifter because it's primarily used for TREC, but I would have no problem cutting them out if it were a trail rig and I wasn't worried about missing a gear in a race situation (purely theoretical at this point..)

I like starting in 2nd in 4lo, but that's because my 4.3 atlas was cool years ago when I had street gears and 35s; but a 3:1 would suit me better... so 2nd gear launch works.

I can see that in a race rig but think it's overkill for a trail rig. Plus it makes it all that harder for the wife to drive.
