Default 1977 VW Rabbit 4x4

This is my latest project I just completed. It's a 1977 Rabbit diesel that the engine had died in so I decided to build it into a 4x4. I put the body on a 1985 S10 frame. I got the truck as part of a trade deal for cleaning the dog crap out of my father in-laws back yard. The S10 body was toast so it was a great donor for my Rabbit project. The engine is a 2.8 carbureted with metric 200 automatic and an NP231 transfere case. I've heard that the metric 200's are just about indestructable so I plan on pounding the piss out of this rig. I wanted to keep the weight down on this thing so I made the body mounts out of 2" exhaust pipe. I had some problems welding the pipe to the body of the rabbit because the floor was really rusted and there was a ton of old shitty undercoating. I found that if turn off the gas on the mig welder, the undercoating doesn't spatter so much when you weld over it. There is a shit ton of porosity in the welds but I don't think that will hurt the strength any. The only other thing I really had to do to install the Rabbit body on the S10 chassis was to cut a hold in the firewall of the Rabbit so the 2.8 distributor had clearance. I left the hole open so I can adjust the timing on the fly while I'm offroading.

I'm really happy with how the whole project turned out. Since the Rabbit was that nasty light brown VW loved in the 70's, I decided to paint it using TSC black tractor paint applied with a really fine roller. I'd also like to get some slightly larger tires for the Rabbit too. I may go as large as 225/75R-15's so I can do some rock crawling too. I don't have the money right now to replace the missing rim so I'm just going to tough it out and wheel it as it sits at Rocks and Valleys.

The donor rabbit. The previous owner was an old lady who smoked and had lots of cats that would ride around with her. The car really stinks inside.

This is the S10 I got for cleaning the dog crap up at my father in-laws back yard. The truck doesn't look too bad on the outside but the underside was completely rusted out. My father in-law's trailer is located on a dirt road and he never washed this truck. That's my dog Stains in the pics. My neighbors hate when he gets out of the fence and I have to go around the area shouting "Come Stains"

Here's a picture of the motor just before I pulled the body. I took a little time and painted the valve covers. I think the motor has a bad valve, it only runs on 5 cylinders.

I moveed the fuel tank inside the body where it will be safe. It stinks like gas in the car so I will eventually have to remove the tank and fix the hole. I'd also like to make it so I don't have to open the hatch to fill the tank.

I found this rusty spot in the frame. I think it's more cosmetic than anything. I may fix it after I get some rock crawliing in.

Right rear main leaf spring was broken so I welded it. I bought some ER70S-6 wire from the flea market. The guy who sold me the wire said the "s" stands for spring.

Sweet leather steering wheel I found at the same flea market I got the mig wire from.

Taking the Body off the S10. I was going to use two cherry pickers but my grandpa let me use his Kubota tractor.

Here is the final product. Don't forget, I'm only going to wheel it with the spare tire a few times. Like I said, I'm really proud how the project turned out. I think I was able to take my fabrication skills to the next level. I'm looking forward to taking this to Rocks and Valleys and hanging out with everybody.

What, you never seen a car converted to a 4x4? I've got at least 20 hours into building this car. Just because it's got a spare tire on it does not mean it's a POS.

The beginning the rabbit has 4 doors and has 2 in the final pic you shave the door?

wheels are different from when it was complete then when your pulling the cab off not to mention the honda sticker and spray paint on the windshield and cab, plus both s10's are different body styles look at the mirrors, other pics dont show any spares, rear bumper on the cars are different in the pics, etc.

I think you could buff those welds up with some JB Weld for wheeling duty.

Don't be a hater just because I have a sick ride. I got a ticket just after I took the last picture as I was leaving Walmart. My left turn signal didn't work. Asshole cops.

Thanks. Who knew undercoating could be used as a cheap substitue for shielding gas.

damn, I was really hoping to see an old diesel powerd VW rabbit sitting on some oddball agricultural planetary axles, with 4 wheel steering and some huge tractor tires that almost touched on each side!

I'm going to put some 265/75-15's on it soon. Those are pretty tall and the all season tread design is way better than tractor tires.

It sits on my driveway in Bay City. I think people really like it because they constantly stop and take pictures of it. I think it makes them happy too because they are laughing when they take the picture. I like making people happy.
