speedometer showing incorrect speed

Well, all the bitching from my wife about going too fast may have been for nothing.

Looks like the speedometer on my 05 Durango is off by about 4mph. I borrowed a GPS (since I can't afford one) and the gps showed different speed than the vehicle's speedometer.

I have 265/65/17 tires on it and I see that it also came with 245/70/17 tires. Could that be the difference? If so is there a way to adjust the speedo to show correct speed?

i just looked up the tire sizes you posted. they are identical in size + or - .1" not enough to make for a 4mph change. chances are the factory calibration is off. this is common on alot of vehicles i have driven. is this 4mph error at 60? most speedometers are only accurate at a certain speed with all other speeds being off slightly. idky that is but from my research speedos read higher above 60 and lower below 60.

I believe it was off at all speeds.

4 mph isn't off enough where i would mess with fixing it. a programmer would fix it if you wanted to spend the money.

Both Jim and my dodge trucks are off 3 mph according to the gps. I just assumed that the gps was off. If it is the trucks then at least we are going 3mph less over the speed limit.

I used that GPS in other cars and it was correct withing a mile. So I knew it was a truck. I really don't care, except that I know my wife will still complain that I'm going over the speed limit, even when I'm not because of the incorrect speedo.
