Angry My HDTV gave up the other night.

I have a 57" Sony KDP-57WS655 that shut off while watching it and started giving me the 10-blink code the other night. Had ABL Electronics come look at it today and they say it needs a deflection board.

I got this TV for free (inherited) and have not had to put any money into it as of yet. Its a 1080i and one of the older, obsolete ones that is a huge piece of furniture in itself and takes up a lot of space. The deflection board appears to be a rather major component, but the $650-$700 estimate seems kind of high. I don't know if I want to deal with getting another TV. Something comparable in size would cost way more than that after the extras (wall mount or some kind of furniture to put it on).

Anyone deal with repairing something like this before?

I have a 50" Samsung that I got for $800...

I'd just buy a different TV.

'tis the age of disposable electronics. take the $650 that it would cost to repair and put it towards a new HDTV with a warranty and all the trimmings...

x2 mileage may vary on the price/bundles. I certainly would not put that kind of money into something that was as described "obsolete"

oh, and if one doesn't like wall mounts - google for "sofa table" or "couch tables" - we found a cherry one that was clearance priced at Fenton Home Furnishings for $100 simply because it didn't have the stubby 6" feet on it. The two shelves are perfect for the other entertainment system components

Man... I wouldn't pay that to have an old school HDTV repaired. My buddies dad is the GM at ABC warehouse, and I just got my parents a 42" samsung (yeah... it's 720p, but at that screen size, who gives a shit) for $350 (advertised at $499)

TVs are so cheap now they're disposable. It's cheaper to replace it with something much newer and better than it would be to fix the old junk.

Due to the sentimental nature of the TV, I say you fix it.

I mean, it would throw skooter_built off if he had to watch a new tv through the windows.
At least consult skooter before making any rash decisions.

Very true, I found the picture quality of that TV to be the best around. Now if Mark gets a flat screen Ill have to change my viewing angle

Check out buy.com or cheapstingybargains for a new tv and get a wallmount bracket from Monoprice.com. Probably end up close to what repair cost would be.

Generally not worth it to do the repairs on something like that.

Wall mounts aren't all that expensive anymore. Especially if you don't need multi-angle tilting.

I'll say this, I have probably a similar looking TV downstairs, a 65" widescreen Toshiba 1080i, and just installed a 37" Vizio LED 1080p upstairs on a wall mount, with all wiring run through the walls.

The Vizio picture puts the Toshiba to shame for everything, except watching soft/film movie (say, lord of the rings, which has muted colors, darker, etc). And I *really* liek how clean the install is with all of the wiring completely hidden.

For an easy way to run wires without too much trouble, get yourself a pair of low voltage old-work boxes (they have no back to them), put one behind the TV, one at the floor. Run your wires through these, then use blank plates, drilled to just fit the wires, and then split the plate partially to allow you to spread it and get the wires in place. Can usually run wirings behind the baseboards along the floor to further conceal.

Its the board with the two heat sinks on it to the lower left. Wondering if this would be as straightforward as replacing something like a PC motherboard. I'll have to see if there are any wires that are soldered directly to it which can't be unplugged.

now that he's got it apart, he'll probably install a compressor, and water pump so it will be "4D" like the special mixed/movie rides at Disney where the movie blows air at you, or sprays water depending on the scene

if you put $700 into a 1080i tv from 2001, I will do both of the following:
1. Lose all respect I had for you
2. Punch you in the face while wearing a skooter_built mask.

Go buy a 65" DLP. You can get them for $1200. They look better then an LCD or a Plasma. The only down side is you have to replace the bulb once every three years ($200) 30 second warm up time, and they're about 1' deep.

Entry level DLP:

The one in my basement is this, it's the "diamond" series. If I had a time machine, I would go back and not buy the diamond.
