Default cummins or duramax?

i am doing my research and cant seem to figure out what one i want. so i decided i would ask gl4x4 for there opinions. i want a diesel thats plain and simple no dually. i want lots of power it will be lifted and chipped. years for cummins 03-07 years for duramax 03-07(not the new body style) i want auto trans. i would like to see the best mpg possible i will have a tuner so switching tunes wont be an issue.towing will be my jeep and maybe another at times, i want best reliability possible. all input would be great. i am more swayed to a dmax at the moment

This is a hard discussion as it will end up most likely just being everyone's personal opinions. I tend to lead more to Duramax, but Cummins are very good in their own ways. I have a very good friend who has had Cummins after Cummins just because of their reliability and towing power. Duramax has plenty of power, and the allison trans is a very good reliable trans. Duramax also tend to be a bit more comfortable while in a long haul. But it all comes down to your personal opinion.

My friend has an 03 Cummins, 4 door longbed, with some type of chip in it. Tows 2 skidsteers on a huge 5th wheel trailer, and it does it without hesitation. Chip was pretty cheap and easy to install. Another friend of mine has about an 03 duramax with a chip in it. I think the Duramax gets better gas mileage in economy mode then does the Cummins. Hook em up bumper to bumper, and power wise, i bet the Cummins would win, but itd be a struggle.

Its hard to find a decently cheap D-max, either they want 20 grand for it, or it has 200k on the clock

so are the cummins trans weak? i know the allison trans are very strong but the higher gears 4,5 or 5 and 6 on the six speeds are weaker and you can limp your tranny more often

The allison trannys will last 300k, but dont expect it to last that long with a chip
Get a Suncoast or ATS

I had an 05 2500 quad cab Cummins Auto 4x4. Loved the Cummins Hated the truck wrapped around it. I will never own another dodge. I personally will be getting a Dmax next time I buy a truck. Get a Classic body style 07 Dmax with the LBZ You will be happy.

First off both great trucks both have positive and negatives...

Cummins has a strong fuel efficient engine off the lot , BUT weak transmission you'll run thru a lot of them if you tow.

Duramax great engine and with EFI Live you can beat Cummins mpg and power . Transmission stock will hold a lot of power ... it will take a lot of abuse and power , and power I mean empty pockets from engine mods ... you can turn a canned tunner up max and run the tranny. With minor transmission mods you can throw more at it . And with a suncoast clutch kit you can make them bullet proof... I'd suggest sign up both forums Cummins and duramax and ask tons questions . Duramaxforum.com has tons of locals on it also .

Depends what you want out of your truck . I've run mine thru the ringer and still holds strong .

Any questions feel free pm me

Also side note with duramax you can fine tune your ecm and get way more mpg and power from it than Cummins using EFI LIVE. STAY away from canned tuners for duramax .

Now for Cummins you can run a canned tunner its all they have currently for them besides Smarty tuners.

Not true I .know a local MI guy who has 500k on his tranny towing across north America and also has track raced it and tows on a high horsepower tune... but I won't argue a suncoast or ats if your going to abuse it is good idea

Yes if you are hard and I mean hard on your tranny while between 4-5 or 5-6 they are the weak point that burns clutches first . I have run tons of dmax thru Hell and one I limped in 5th at 120 mph using a 175 HP tune and alcohol injection ...

Duramax all the way. Better truck wrapped around the motor/tranny combo. My dad tows a 36' trailer all stock form and has 550 k on it and no problems ever.

Its a hard call to make, My cummins has 250,xxx on it and the motor runs like it is new. Everything else around it is not the greatest. My Gramps has a 09 LMM dmax and the fucker flat out hauls ass, his LBZ 07 with a bully dog power pup on it was a screamer also. Very comfy also. Pretty sure i would buy a Dmax and swap a strait axle into it instead of a off the shelf lift.
