I would like more details on this 550+ hp 401. Having built a 401, that is a BIG number. I would like to know how you did that and mine only makes 400 on pump gas. Post the dyno sheet on so I can see the numbers please.

I have a friend's dad who has been racing amc's for year's and know's them well i'll get all the info when i go pick it up. I have been helping him on it to trying to soak up some knowledge on amc motor's as i am not real familiar with them. This is some of what i know with out the paper work.

# 1 take's more $ then i thought
Indy head's ported polished
Indy intake
Eagle rod's
Steel crank
Wiseco piston's 11-1
Msd
Holley 930
Comp cam 252/258 630/630 i think
Ati damper
This is of the top of my head now all i need is $ to finish paying for it.

How does your 401 do in your's, i figured it would take alot of power to make this feel strong and pull hard for the size of them. I know of a guy who run's his fsj on the track and i think he run's in 12's or high 11's i'll see if i can find more info on his also.

Stock 1977 heads with stock bridged rockers
Stock rods with ARP bolts
9.5:1 KB pistons (junk)
224 duration .450 lift cam
Edelbrock dual plane air gap intake
Edelbrock shorty headers

Basically nothing special, probably a 400 hp engine. It went a best of 13.24 @ 99 mph on motor. On the bottle it ran 12.5x @ 105 when the clocks were on, faster when it wasn't if you know what I mean. Truck was built for drag but looked and sounded stock, 2wd dana 44 front, 2wd th400 w/10" converter, 4.10 gears, 28x11 tires. I semi-retired that truck from racing and it's got a stock 360 now. I'm going to build another 401 for it this summer. Nothing special just enough to run mid-high 12s on motor.

I've been redoing the first 401 for my new Jeep. Pretty much a twin to yours except iron heads with a lot of work. And injected on E85. Hoping for somewhere in the neighborhood of 530-540 hp. Going in an 83 Cherokee WT.

What casting # are your head's, your stuff look's very nice and good luck with your new motor. The guy helping me had a line on an indy block but way more $ then i was going to spend. I hope to have mine going in a few month's as long as the money is there.

Heads are 502-2 casting. They're the first set of heads I've done by myself so we'll see how they actually work. The flow numbers are good but we race Jeeps not flow benches. I did 2.08/1.74 valves, full port job, reworked combustion chambers (now 64cc), etc. These heads are just temporary until I can get a set of Indys. I'll be able to use them for the new 401 in the black Jeep so it's not like I wasted my time on working a set of iron heads.

I know what you mean about the $$ thing. My chassis guy had an opening so I sent it off for the cage last week and had to put $$ down, then my engine parts bill came the next day. Double ouch.

I think you talked to my old man this summer at a car show. I know he showed me pictures of your Cherokee. Looks like you have done a lot of nice work to it since then. Any pictures of the engine?
