Default St Helen Motorsport Area *ROCKS*

We had our pre-construction meeting for the rock courses at the Motorsport area yesterday. Construction is expected to begin in the next few weeks!

What to expect:

Entry level rock course

Ledge/stair step course

Pipe course like what is found at the Mounds

2 large rock courses with one 100' long run and another run at 50'

All of these courses are in a "bowl" with multiple uphill sand shoots in which the obstacles will be built.

This has been a lengthy process as 5 years has passed since I first sat on the MSA advisory board representing GLFWDA, so to say I am happy to see it come to fruition would be an understatement.

This is another example of what your state 4WD Association does on your behalf! Support The Sport!

I have not followed this but am very interested. We camp near and also have property close by St Helen. Is there a thread following this or where can I get more info. I would love the opportunity to help in anyway possible.

Thanks for making the trip out there yesterday Pat - any target completion date other than "fall"?

Awesome news!!!! Was the revised master plan ever released after the comments were taken into consideration? I'm curious to see how much of an impact GLFWDA's input had on their original conception. And, it'll be interesting to see how closely they follow the guidelines.

Any idea what company is doing the contracting?

I can't answer your question direct but it sure was nice to have them call Pat to come up and review the site plan person to person. In itself, that is an improvment over what happened at the Mounds.

Agreed 100%.

The reason I'm asking is because it'll be interesting to see the comparison of the two after it is all done.

I was caught off guard somewhat when they asked me what changes I wanted to make. I took advantage of that offer and combined two of the 3 "large" rock courses to make a 100' long winding course vs three 50' courses. I then moved it's location to a windy uphill vs a straight shot.

I also suggested only one pipe course and we substituted the 2nd one for more rocks of varying size. I also will be able to be present during construction and would like to have another GLFWDA member go with me. Paige assured me that we are the customers on this project and our input is of great value to it's success. She is a great asset and ally for us and she is looking forward to her trip to Drummond next month.

We also have the opportunity to add as much rock to this project as we can afford. I have a call into Spec stone in Alpena to get a breakdown on cost. Pete's Excavating is doing the work.

This project is set to start in the next couple weeks and take approx 2 weeks to complete.

Being new to the site, and someone who has witnessed the changes at the mounds, was there some development problems or did something not get implemented as it was supposed to?

It boiled down to slow moving governmental bureaucracy

Great news! I know there have been many people including Pat putting in a lot of time to keep this moving forward. It's good to see some forward progress.

Do you who got the bid to build the course? The Guy who owned one of the companies that bid on this is buying my grandparents business in Midland and was talking about this project with my parents. Just wondering

Pete's Excavating, they were present for yesterdays meeting and I showed him several pics on my laptop of the various places and courses we play on.
