Due to ownership, I am becoming a Liberty hater but, this Liberty is sweet! A v-8? Pure awesome!

Default Some Progress

I've got most of the parts so far. Still need spark (going with Mallory, I think) and a way to cool it (ordering the radiator this week hopefully). Doing a quick freshen up on the engine now.

C4 Transmission

BW1354 Transfer case

Motor mounts from Novak Conversions

Sanderson block hugger shorty headers - also from Novak

New Auto Meter Ultra Lite II gauges installed in the factory dash cluster

Okay ... so things don't go as quickly as I planned , but I'm making progress !
The factory motor mounts are cut off of the engine cradle now and as soon as I get everything cleaned up and a fresh coat of paint it's going in!

That's it for now ... more to come!!!

Are you using a carb or efi? What cam? Roller or flat tappet?

Default Carb

I will be going carbed. This is the carb that came with the motor

I understand there is a off road jet or float kit for it? I'm assuming it will keep the engine from starving on a hill? Does anybody know a # for this kit? Does Jeg's carry it?

As far as the cam and lifters ... ... I'm not sure. I couldn't get any #'s from the guy I bought it from and I haven't pulled the heads. I think I'm just gonna go with whatever is in it for now and hope for the best. Once I get everything all mounted up and the motor mounts and xmember all welded and fabbed it won't be too hard to go ahead and yank this one out if need be. Once it's all in I may go ahead and get another rebuildable 302 and take my time and rebuild it MY way. But this one will get me running!

Dont waist your money on a Mallory dizzy then. A stock Ford Duraspark distributor is fine and cheap for any motor. Just remember if your using a flat tappet cam which is cast iron you need a dizzy with a iron gear as well.If you have a roller cam which is steel you need a steel gear on the dizzy to match. Or Comp Cams sells a 100.00 composite dizzy gear that goes both ways.

Best IRON gear dizzy to use is a 1983 Mustang GT 5.0 5sp distributor.

Best Steel geared distributor is out of a 1985 Mustang GT 5.0 carbed 5 spd.

Last time I bought one was through Autozone and it was 55.00

Default Motor Installation!!

Hanging the motor and trans on a hoist tomorrow and welding in motor mounts and crossmember mounts.

Once I got the motor torn down and went through it, measuring and checking everything I ended up with a better deal than I thought.
Here's what's going in:
302 with .060 over flat top pistons, 5.40 inch H beam rods, 280H cam, Gear drive timing set, Aluminum Edelbrock Performer Intake, 351 Heads, Headers. I think we got us a 352 here boys!!!

I'll make another post tomorrow night with pics of it sitting in place!!!!

Default It fits !!!!!

Many Thanks go out to BugginKJ and Tommudd! Even tho Tom was only there for a little while he came at just the right time!!

So, Today ............. WE PUT THIS

IN HERE!

WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM THE GUY IN SANDALS AND JIMMY BUFFETT'S SHIRT

Ended up a little like this!

Lots of Firewall clearance!

We located where the motor mounts could go, then where they should go, then where they needed to be. We ended up at the last one! It is going to be real close on the radiator clearance. We had lots of clearance everywhere else. Oh..... except for the stock crossmember. I am going to have to modify the crossmember, Thought it might just work, but I was MISTAKEN not wrong! The problem is clearance on the 1354 transfer case. The yoke for the front driveshaft doesn't have enough clearance. So we will notch that part, reinforce it and drop that section 2".

HAD IT IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Then we pulled it out!
Ready to weld in the motor mounts here

Went to start setting the welder up on some scrap steel and couldn't get the welder to work right! I was trying to run it off a 6000w generator but the voltage wasn't right or something and couldn't make it hot enough to penetrate! ( I hate it when that happens! ) Anyway I'm going to get a welder extension cord from work and wire it to a breaker, so it should work tomorrow for BugginKJ to weld these up for me. I'll weld on a lot of stuff but I'll leave the motor mounts and crossmember to the "pros". Back at it tomorrow after I get the welder working!

So that's it for today.
Thanks for watching!

Default Progress!

We went ahead and cracked a beer, (first things first!) then put the motor and trans back in their hole to triple check everything before the final welding. Got everything laid out and yanked the combo back out. Ground down everything one last time for fresh surfaces to weld to, then I backed off, 'cause I was in BugginKJ's way!!

Had a Beer

Had a Beer

Had another Beer, what the hey, I wasn't welding!!

This motor mount is supposed to sit flat on a CJ framerail which is about 4" tall. Our cradle is only 2" so I cut some 3" C channel and we gussetted the back with that. It ain't goin' anywhere.

And another Beer
Once both sides were done and cooled down we slid the motor and trans back in and threw some bolts in the mounts.

Dang! That calls for a Beer

Sat and admired this for a while ... and had a ..... yes, more beer

Beer ... Then started on the Transmission Crossmember

The trans crossmember is going to have to be modified rather heavily to clear the front driveshaft yoke. I am going to do the mods this week for the trans mount and then we will have to put the combo back in and out another time or two for those mods.

Oil Pan clearance at the Rack is close, but still about an inch away, by the way.. this is just a mock up oil pan!

We may have to modify the driver's side mount slightly for a little more clearance at the steering shaft where it meets the steering box.

Looking great so far! Hell you might even get your 302 swap done before me!

Sidenote...got any good driverside CV shafts? Me and Dawn went to Bundy Hill saturday and broke a CV back in the woods. So proud of her.

Thanks Brian, I'm hoping to get it finished up in the next 3-4 weeks. Sorry, I don't have any CV shafts, but I might know where to get one. I'll check with one of my KJ buddies over off Airport Hwy and see what he's got and how much he might want for it. He's one of those parts hoarders! But, then again, when I get this thing running, I'm headed to Bundy myself and I might need it for mine!!!!

Default Still Workin on it!

Been a couple weeks since I updated here. The motor is about ready to go in. I've picked up some more parts and am modifying the crossmember this week. Should be doing a final test fit of the motor, trans and transfer case this coming weekend. Here's a few more pics.

MSD 6AL Ignition

Mounted in factory ECM location

Aluminum 26" x 19" double 1" core crossflow radiator

Modifying the factory crossmember to clear the front yoke on the BW1354

I just keep pluggin away at it. I'll get it runnin' one of these days. It's just not going as fast as I'd like it to! Life just keeps gettin in the way!!!
