Default 01 2500 cummins transmission

I just picked up an 01 cummins that needs the tranny rebuilt/swapped. I just started looking into it and the best I can figure out is that is almost exactly like an allison tranny (except its called a 47re?). Would it be better to take it in and get it rebuilt of just buy a used one. It is currently slipping in 1rst and 2nd when trying to go up an incline. I know the guy that I bought it from and said that reverse acted up on it once the other day also. The truck is going to be a beater so I don't have to drive the 2010 in the woods when I take the dogs out hunting. It will also be driven to work and around a little bit to keep the miles off from the new one.

get it rebuilt. a used one will likely do the same. alot of folks use billit converters and what not in them so they last alot longer.

my trans is full ats billit trans and im pushing out alot of power with no worries.

do you plan to tow with it at all?

I don't plan to do any towing with it. I have an 2010 2500hd that I bought for towing the boat and the 4 spot. What is that full ats billet rebuild going to run?

It will eventually be lifted a little bit and run 35's or 37's.

About $3500-$4000

*Edit* oops my bad.... They range from $4000 to $8000+

The 47re is no where near the same as an Allison. It isn't a terrible trans either. Get it rebuilt. A good stock rebuild with some valve body updates (transgo) and a decent torque converter should be fine for what you want to do with it.

Thanks Tranny Tom, I have done some looking around and have found a couple places that are around 1100-1500 for a rebuilt with a new TC. Thanks for the info on the valve body updates.

FWIW i just ordered a billet TQ from my local carquest. Precision brand i think,400 bucks, it seems to be a decent unit. I have used them before in other builds. Having a local guy go through the trans and upgrade the valvebody and check a few things out while it is out.

As talked about here, spend a little extra for a converter, and you will like the truck alot more.

Also, get a fuel psi gage in that truck!!! If it does not have one of course.

Yes. A lot of people are running them and seem to like them. I'm going to pic one up for my Ally and see how it works after I tune it.

R&R gets alot better after the first one. We almost cut it in half doing our second one last month.
