Default 700r4 torque converter/lockup ?

Several years ago I did a tbi 4.3/700r4 swap from a 91 s10 blazer into my yj. Just afterwards I had the torque converter take a dump on me. So at that time I had the trans rebuilt w/ some goodies. I was asked if I wanted a lockup or non lockup converter I said I don't need a lockup converter(at that time I hadn't completed the wiring and didnt have the trans lockup wired from the computer and wasn't sure I was going to) Not long after I ended up wiring up the lockup from the computer to the trans and it hasnt had a problem(i drive it maybe a few hundred miles in the summer)

Well in the last week or two I figured out the wiring and signal conversion for the VSS (the jeep originaly had a manual speedometer) so now i have a working electric speedometer as well as a speed signal to the computer that I did not have before. Since getting this speed signal to the computer the transmission will make a loud rattling sound in certain situations (where ive coasted a little ways then apply a firm throttle and under hard acceleration, and a few others).

My thought was that this is the transmission trying to lockup a non-lockup converter. So I unpluggd the electrical connector ino the transmission and took it for a spin and no noise. This I believe confirms my suspicion.

So now im thinking of running to the parts store and picking up a lockup converter to swap in. I guess i'm looking for input if this makes sense to those that are more knowledgeable about transmissions than I. Does the chevy computer rely on the VSS to tell the transmission when to lock the converter?(it was fine before the computer got the vss signal)
