Project Cheap YJ
Hey all, been on the site for a while, got my newest project.
I've had late 70's Broncos,F-150's and a F350.
Started redoing a 1989 Grand Wagoneer, but the rust and crappy mileage are getting the best of me.
So, here is my latest toy.
1987 Wrangler bought for super cheap. 114k miles motor changed at 57k. Was told it was 4.2, surprised when I got it home.
Peeled of the stickers and stuff I didn't want on it.
Had to replace the old 4.2 head someone put on a 4.0 shrtblock. It never sealed right and bled coolant under the intake. After rebuilding a '96 4.0 head I had in the garage, I finally got it on and dialed in. Took some mods to the intake,p/s bracket and shift linkage bracket. Already had a weber carb on it, sorted out the vacuum mess.
In the process of putting floor pans in it.
The auto trans doesn't like grab reverse well, will be coming out for a rebuild this week. I already flushed and adjusted the bands, didn't help much.
Starter was loose, replaced under warranty. Same with battery.
Frame is surprisingly clean and it's never been lifted.
Sorted out the brakes, old booster leaked vacuum.
-family Tj style cage
-2.5 inch lift
-31 or 33 inch tires
-drive it and figure out what is next on the list
Best part is I've only got $650 bucks in it to date

Ya I could see major coolant leaks with that setup with the 4.0 having more passages
It had to be dog with the 4.0 bottom end and 4.2 head, it's like the worst parts of both motors
