UPDATE:

My thread looks like there was some = on going on in it???

Anyways, the pan was pulled to reveal that the block is a 2 pc., not easy to check rods/mains.

So, the motor is out and the #4 rod spun. I am looking for a place to get the crank turned. Also need to check the rod and hope it does not need machined as well.

Anyplace semi close to Muskegon where I should get the machine work done?

Interesting information about the rods. They are NOT machined where they mate together. = http://forums.focaljet.com/svt-headq...d-up-rods.html

Damn, I feel like a newbie asking this question.

Question for yah, somehow, while 2 sources sold me rings that they said would work and did not, I ended up not having notes telling me how the rings were placed. The ford rings did not come with any notes on how to install (I have never had rings come without these notes??). I did note rotation, and understand how that works (do not have them in line etc...). Dumb mistake, I know.

I am wondering if someone can tell me which side goes up on the relieved compression ring?

More info.

Stock piston and rings (02 svtf)

Top compression rings is noted as to which side goes up.

The other compression ring is not noted and is relieved on the OD side (similar to a chamfer but a square section is removed). They took about .01" off the thickness and .06" off the diameter. I would think it had to be ground off?
Here is a picture of a simular ring, the od has a section "relieved" = http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=...KIGclgeD0tW-CQ

Thanks ALLOT, I am needing to get this thing together.

your pic link does not work, but if I understand what you are describing correctly, you have a groove cut around the outside of the 2nd ring, correct? I believe that would go up, away from crankcase pressure...if it were down, then the crankcase pressure could act on the face that is parallel to the piston skirt and push it in towards the piston, rather then letting it seal to the wall

my reasoning is really just a theory, but I believe it does go up regardless

Thanks Yota Bill,

Just found this = http://www.federalmogul.com/korihand...on_19.htm#1130
and it looks like the napier ring. I am going to look at the ring with some magnification to make sure. I can not believe the ford manual does not have the information, that irritates me more as I dig into this.

Are you using a factory Ford repair mainual?
Ford tends to assume that a dealer is going to be doing this work and will be using Ford parts. have you checked the Steelership for rings? You will probably need the VIn number and build date to get the proper rings.

good luck
