Default dana 30 diff cover question

can i use a factory cherokkee diff cover on a stock 99 tj? reason is i need to change the fluid in the wifes diff so i figured while i was at it i picked up a front cover from the junkyard from a cherokkee to clean and paint. i noticed the fill plug is higher on the cherokkee cover but other than thats its the same. should i use it or not, dont know how much fluid capacity it will change and also if the plug was different from the high to low pinnion for clearance of gears.

You can use it. If you overfill it, it will adjust itself "automatically".

what do you mean it will adjust its self automaticly? by spraying everywhere from the pinion seal?

I suppose that could be one possibility, but I would probably expect it to come from the vent hose first.

What you are asking about is not exactly uncommon for people to do who increase their pinion angles. See how much higher it would put your level. If it looks too high, just put the factory spec'd volume in.

if your that concerned with just the placement of the fill hole, get a tape measure and a drill and fix it

It wouldn't be that easy. I don't think that the stock diff cover is thick enough to drill & tap.

so weld on a small piece of 1/4" or 3/8", then drill and tap...not difficult

just fill it up about 1" lower than the bottom of the new hole. I have been doing that for years.

I'm sure if he asked, someone on here would weld the little piece of scrap on to his cover
