God I made the mistake of opening the door to them last night after they sent a ton of letters and left notes. I thought my roommate left for work without his keys again...

The guy was so baffled by our answers because this is a company house that is owned by them and that we are all only there for 3 months at a time and counted on census forms in our home states.

They stopped by here also, and asked for my phone # and I refused. They don't need my # to count heads.

No tinfoil hat stuff or even moderately interesting conspiracy theories. Just boring saga of government waste and inefficiency.

I had heard that at one time the censes was done by an independent company for the government and now that obama is in and running the show, the have taken another part of private sector business and made it their own. Now the censes is being run by the government.
My wife told me that she did it over the phone, so no need for them to come to your door.

x2. It would be REALLY FUN dealing with a bunch of morons who refuse to cooperate because they think that I'm collecting information for the New World Order and trying to insert a chip into them.

Something like this might happen:

P.S. I'm pretty sure they ruled it as a suicide, but why the "fed" part, then?

I love how just because I happen to think that this whole thing is a load that I must be a conspiracy theorist and completely out of my mind. The thing's that piss me off about this is.
1. The government has taken over yet another thing that was once controlled by the private sector.
2. They ask questions that are unconstitutional, the only things they need to know are how many people live at the residence and how long they have lived here. Thats it.
3. They don't need to know the race and sex of everyone in the house because everyone is equal, right?

They should be asking whether or not you are an American citizen.

And I'm certainly not giving them my phone number. The only thing worse than a telemarketer is a government telemarketer.

The U.S. Census has always been conducted by some level of government. Originally, it was done by local marshals until 1840 when it was consolidated into the Census Agency and then in 1903 it was placed under the newly formed Department of Commerce as the Census Bureau.

And for those still wondering what questions are actually on the form: http://2010.census.gov/2010census/ho...ctive-form.php

I would REALLY like to know where you actually get your information. So much of it is complete BS it is just amazing.

Never heard of the Census being conducted over the phone, maybe a rural thing though. Wouuld make sense in some cases. However, filling out the form in the first place and sending it in would have saved us taxpayers a lot of money.

I think you and Aber have the same source. Believing that kind of BS is why people think you might be a conspiracy theorist. I worked for the Census Bureau 30 years ago and was a temporary federal government employee.

2. They ask questions that are unconstitutional, the only things they need to know are how many people live at the residence and how long they have lived here. Thats it.
Are they unconstitutional? Do you know what the Constitution says? "in such a manner as they shall by law direct" Congress has the constitutional directive to pass laws governing the census, in other words, what hey say goes into it and bcomes the census.

They should be asking whether or not you are an American citizen.

Thank you for clearing that up, though I think the facts will be lost on some here.

If they ask you other questions that are on the form, then you are actually violating the constitution, since that document gave the congress the ability to determine what is on the form.

Why plug in the any particular political party? Why not just say it is used that way by whoever is in power at the time the census is conducted? That would be a much more truthful statement.

I think a lot of people fail to realize that it's not only the government that uses Census information (and other information from the Bureau of Economic Analysis and Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Private industries use the data quite frequently to help decide where to locate their offices and manufacturing facilities. Do they want to move to an area that has a good supply of engineers and skilled laborers or do they want to locate in an area with nothing but gas station attendants? Retailers look at reams of old data to build models of population shifts and changes to decide where to place their new stores. Ever wonder why Home Depot and Sherwin Williams always seem to know where a bunch of new subdivisions are going in before ground is even broken? Because they can see the totals of new permits issued each month thanks to the Department of Commerce and Economic Census. Hospitals and school districts use the data to know where the population is aging and where the new children are being born so that they are prepared with new health care facilities for the old and new schools for the young.

Sure, the Census may not be the most efficient government run program, but the data they collect is used by a lot more than politicians looking to Gerrymander a district to make sure their power remains in power.

Another thing that amazes me is that the general public must assume the Census Bureau just sort of fades away for ten years only to reemerge at the start of each decade to waste our time with a page or two of questions. The Census Bureau and the Department of Commerce are constantly collecting data - whether it's for the Decennial Census (which is what gets all the news), the American Community Survey (basically an ongoing census with most of the questions that were on the old long form), the Economic Census (a census of local business activity done every 5 years), Local Area Unemployment Statistics Updates, wage and salary survey information, foreign and domestic trade statistics, building permit tracking, etc.

Some people would rather repeat some Fox News talking points about how unconstitutional the Census is rather than investigate for themselves what the Census (and similar programs) really does, what the President or Congress or the Constitution actually authorizes or prohibits, or who all uses the information.

But that would just make too much sense and pop the balloon on the hate-filled rhetoric that some produce and others swallow.

It was a huge PITA......and all I did was GPS mapping and drop forms off at nursing homes.

Thanks for the $6k though. It bought me some nice guns.
