Default Jetting, who knows their Sh$t

so im putting an 05 honda 450R carb on my 00 honda 400ex (fairly common swap) i have a 12.5:1 440 big bore.. pro circuit T-4 exhaust no air box lid. K&n filter. stg 2 hot cam (thinkin about going to a stage 3) im also running a white bro's CDI box but i dont think that affects jetting. who around here knows jetting ? cause i have NO idea where to start..

I looked on ATV riders and all i got were a bunch of "well i run this jet in my 416 motor or umm make sure you use the 450 fuel line" for some reason no one will come out and says i have a 400 kit with that exh and i run these jets.. and even then their elevation might be way off. The quad is at my buddies house in dearborn where ive been working on it if anyone down there wants to give me some advice on whats jets to order before i buy a bunch of jets i dont need.

If you're eyes are watering it's running rich, if you're melting pistons it's running lean. Shoot for somewhere in between.

Check out thumpertalk too, I'm pretty sure they have a motorized sofa section (ATV).

I know my shit.

I would start with the stock 450 sizes and buy the next 3 steps leaner / 2 steps richer and get whatever needle is popular with the squids these days.

All of the mods you performed might get you close to flowing as much as a stock 450R and any extra fuel will just help with cooling your intake charge to inhibit knock. (12.5:1 cr on a air-cooler is gonna get hot)

Also, I would highly recommend using 15W-40 Delo 400 for your engine oil - it is going to take a beating without an oil cooler.

Any more q's, shoot me a pm.

Yes - the truck oil.

It still has a high phosphorus content and is awesome for lubrication and break-in. "Gasoline" oils have no phosphorus, as it damages catalytic converters if it is ever burned.

Don't waste your time installing that carb. Go get yourself an FCR off a CRF 450 or an 06 or later TRX. Also I would not advise using amsoil in a 400ex. 400ex engine and trans share the same oil and you have a wet clutch system-I have seen amsoil wipe out more than one 400ex clutch. I used to race 400exs before the 450's came out-trust me. I would run honda HP4 oil with out molly. But before you decide on an oil make sure you read up on your cam because I know some hot cams say to not use synthetic oil with them. Did you install over-sized head studs on that?

they are the stock size head studs. and hot cams says to use non synthetic only for break-in purposes.

If I were you I'd be installing oversized head studs or you will be blowing head gaskets left and right. One of the biggest and most over looked problems with 440's with high compression.

i agree if he was racing and was beating it every weekend. But just as a recreational ride it should be fine. i had a 426ex with 13.5:1 compression and stock studs and never blew a head gasket. It was my trail and dune bike and i raced my 450. I think he'll be fine for what he's doing with it.
