Default Drummond Island - Lincoln Road bermed in many areas

West of the clay pits, and NE of them. Walked the north berm and found that it was blocked off very recently with 400' between the newly placed rocks/trees/logs.

Anybody know whats up with these?

Also came across the ORV route (I'll have to look at GPS to see cord) where they have the ORV route posted as "ROAD CLOSED FOR LOGGING" Since when do they close roads for logging?

Marblehead's steps now have huge rocks blocking the north side climb. I mean, the new obstacle is fun.

They could be trying to close that side down and keep people on the original trail. That loop started as a bypass only big enough for an atv/bike, and then grew into a jeep bypass, and then became just about the same as running the other section.

I don't think it was ever official, and I'd guess they are trying to keep it from expanding.

that is correct. it is just to keep the trail from getting larger. the main steps will stay the same.

I know they were doing some logging last year around the claypits when we were up there for the signing.

That trail is not defined, maybe they should put up signs stating not to use the north steps.

The changes at Marble Head were one of four compromises that were made in order to get the rest of the system to pass through the designation process.

The compromises were:

1) The portion of the steps north of the birch tree and the last 100' of the trail on the cliff were given up to vehicle access.

2) Shale Beach will be restricted to just the area where the trail meets the beach. The beach will be blocked from vehicles with the large boulders that we felt looked more natural (better) than berms, stumps or gates, etc.

The new parking area WILL be treated to remove the poison ivy.

3) New parallel roadway will be constructed next to the South Marblehead Road so that we can keep the existing road as the ORV Route.

4) Clear Lake Road will be improved to 2wd standards with the exception of the (approx) 1/2 mile long "Katona's Cut" that will leave the best stretch of that road that doesn't have FLOWING water on it. The flowing water MUST have culverts installed . . . and will.

In return for these concessions, we were able to get the Route listed on the map below AND set the following precedents:

1) This is the first time the DNRE has designated an ORV Route with 4x4 recreation as the primary intended user group.

2) It's the first time the DEQ has allowed wetland impact so that we can have those culverts placed.

3) It's the first time parallel road has been approved so that a degraded roadway can be converted to ORV Route.

4) This is the first time we've been allowed to designate standing water holes (less than 5 acres and NO flowing water) as an intended portion of an ORV Route.

Please also keep in mind that some of the trails won't "wear in" to their intended difficulty level for several years yet.

No more have been needed. Those have most been accomplished and are written into the area's Transportation Plan. Now we just wait for the Routes to settle into their intended difficulty levels. That shouldn't take too long. Dipstick Hole will need to be filled in a little bit soon. It's getting deeper than intended. It's currently around 5 feet deep - deeper than most air intakes. It's only intended to get to about 3 feet deep (plus or minus a little bit).
