Call Congress Now - Specter Rushing Thursday Vote on Surveillance Bill
August 02, 2006

Because of phone calls and letters from constituents like you, Senator Arlen Specter is feeling the heat. Having previously delayed a vote on his dangerous surveillance bill, he is now intent on moving it out of committee on Thursday. This sham "compromise" bill will help the government continue to break the law, vastly expanding the president's power to spy on you without any meaningful oversight from Congress or the courts. If you haven't already called and your Senator is on the Judiciary Committee, please use our Action Center and call your Senator immediately to stop this dangerous bill.

Your friends and family could be constituents of Judiciary Committee members -- spread the word and urge them to call Congress now. If you're a blogger, post a "Stop the Surveillance Bills"

Maybe the fear of not having privacy.

It's not that I'm afraid that they will catch me doing wrong, but, think about this. You tell your buddy over the phone that you're going to indiana to get some fireworks. Then the ATF shows up at your door looking for explosives, and you're labeled a terrorist . . . for the rest of your life.

I've got friends who are on 'watch' lists by the government because they legally collect guns. They have friends that have gone to prison for years because they were in violation of one single technicality in paperwork.

They get a little suspicion, then they go data mining, looking for dirt on you.

It's pretty useless in actually trying to catch a terrorist in my opinion. How many actual terrorists do you think discuss their plots on telephones and email?

Hehe,
I just don't beleive that with all of the public knowledge of phone tapping and recording, and hell, damn near every email is public domain if you really want it to be, that a terrorist will call up his buddies and give away any info. Just picking up a phone is a dead giveaway to the feds.

As posted by Jesus in another thread:
The 2nd amendment was written for a completely different purpose than what its used for today.

Amendment II
A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

The 4th amendment is trampled on by the Bush Admin under the flag of fighting terrorism and music sharing....

Amendment IV
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

I'm not anti-Bush or anything, I voted for him twice. I just don't like the infringement on citizens. That's why I voted anti-democrat.

Blah blah.

I'm adding to my signature . . .

I don't care if they listen to my phone calls, read my e-mail, etc. etc,(it would all be hear-say anyway) but I agree we have to watch they do not cross some lines like being able to search your home, your bank accounts etc with out you knowing. that is going over the line if you ask me. If you are being investagated you should have the right to know.

Yeah, just let them take all your rights away, one by one in the "just cause" of "fighting terrorism". You must be quite simple to just say, "go ahead listen to everything i do, i'm not doing anything illegal..." Bush Sheep! Bahh, Bahh

The problems with lines is where to draw them. Someone will always disagree. Watching who trades in guns seems harmless with the average Joe but when it comes down to it, if out of 100 innocent people are watched and 1 bad egg is stopped then was it worth it. Who says we can or can't tap, and if you are worried about infringement of rights then maybe we need to be self policing.

I am not saying where is stand on this because I honestly don't know. I can see both sides.

On a side note, anyone have any extreme thoughts lately. I can see society becoming something out of the movies. Either Mad Max/Postman or Controlled society like Soylent Green.

I don't have a problem with surveillance by the government, I have nothing to hide.

If losing my privacy will stop a terrorist attack on this country its something I'd gladly give.

Edit: The biggest thing that people don't realize is that this, "war on terror" isn't a war like we are used to. You don't need FBI's and CIA's to fight the Nazis, but you do for this war because its against small groups of people that are probably already among us. How do we find them out? Surveillance...
