Default 84 k5 blazer speedometer problem

Well i just got a 84 k5 blazer on it and the speedometer doesn't work at all. Everything else works except the speedometer. I was told it could be the speed sensor, but i want to make sure so i don't buy the wrong part.

Thanks in advance.

there is no speed sensor. it's cable driven. more then likely the cable snapped or the gear inside the t-case is eaten up.

I've seen the clip on the tailshaft speedo gear break too.

when you reach up behind the speedo head there is a clip you depress to pull the housing off the speedo head. if you pull it off and look into it there should be a square drive peg, its plastic in most cases. gently pull it out. its attached to the cable. if the whole cable comes out (about 7-9 feet of it) then look for a square at the bottom end. if its good then that's not it. grease it with GM speedo cable grease then re install. if it spins while driving then the speedo head is the issue. either the cable wasn't pushed in far enough or the speedo head is broken. that requires you to pull the cluster to inspect.
