Default How long to swap out glowplugs on a 7.3

1999 f450, all the glow plugs. How much time should I plan on using up for this task?

It's in the shop and I'm being quoted at $680 for the labor + parts. I can get the plugs for $8.00 a piece from my local napa.

It is not fun when they snap off in the head .

Edit*

Are you going to attempt this yourself? I would say 1-2 hours per side.

Depending on which shop guide, it books for 3.5-4.2 hours.

thanks guys. Are there anything under the valve cover I need to worry about, such as harnesses or the like? I just need plugs, and valve cover gaskets?

If I recall correctly you shouldn't need anything except plugs and gaskets unless the harnesses are in poor condition... won't know until you get it apart.

Take a good look at the valve cover gaskets. They have a plug that goes through them for the harness that goes to the injectors & glow plugs, they like to burn up.

What glow plugs are you getting from Napa for $8? From what little bit of experience I have and the "word on the street" I think it would be worth the couple extra bucks apiece to get some Motorcrafts.

X2!

Also go to your Dealer and buy 1 package of 2C3Z-14A163-AB

That is a small retainer that keeps the harness on the inside of the V/C from vibrating loose.

Labor wise it's about 2-4 hrs total.

A couple of tips:

If the plug doesn't come out, or gets tough to turn, don't force it. Try running it back in a bit, then back out - sorta like when you're cutting new threads with a tap. Take your time.

Use a mightyvac or something similar to evacuate the oil out of the glowplug recesses before you pull them out. Oil = fuel and you can get a rather unsavory start-up if you have cylinders with a bunch of oil in them.

Enjoy removing the I/C plumbing.

you will be pissed when your cheap glow plugs snap off in the cylinder and wreck the cylinder lining.

Get the motorcrafts

You don't need valvecover gaskets, they are reusable.

X10 on the autolights being junk, Beru is who makes the motorcraft plugs. Best you can get for a ford. On the IDI motors the autolights swell up and break off when you try and remove them

If I were you I stick to motorcraft.

Autolite's tip will get swell then stuck inside.

If they are all inoperative you might want to check the relay. Also the harness is part if the gasket.
