Default Legal / ethcial question

So, my grandmother is pretty sick.
She lives alone, but people go over daily. She can still take care of herself, and, at this point does not want to go into assisted living.

A former neighbor (a lady much younger than my grandma) had been cleaning her house and helping out.

We just found out that this lady has borrowed LARGE sums of $$ from my grandma. My grandma does not know exactly how much. We are estimating about $30k over three seperate instances. Some has been piad back, but we are estimating about $15k - $20k still owed.

We also just found out that this lady was taking some of my grandmas pain medicine (i.e. oxycontin and morphine patches) to give to her addicted son.

An uncle called to tell her she is no longer allowed to set foot at my grandmothers house. He also mentioned that the money is due now. He also threatened to inform the police about the missing drugs.

So.....

What do we do?
Go to the police?
Get the money and forget about it?
Threaten to go to the police if the money is not returned?

I am of the opinion to go to the police regardless. The money is not a huge issue, but nice to have.

The worst part, my grandmother has ha unnecessary pain so this lady could supply drugs to her child.

take it to the police. making your grandmother suffer by taking her drugs to an addict is BS. then if the money is that important sue her afterwards. my .02

Depending on how sick your grandmother is, I wouldn't want to put her through the legalities of the whole thing. I would say get the money, tell the bitch to stay away, and forget about it.

In many instances Id reply with a dumbass remark, however I personally would go after this lady with the highest extent of the laws abilility. Those that prey on the elderly are complete trash in my book. Id call the police and a lawer. First sue her to get the money back, then if nothing happens have the police arrest her for the stolen drugs.

Go to the police. People like this make me angry. The money may not be a huge deal, but the drugs sure are.

The money is not a huge issue. $20k would be nice to have, but will not impact my grandmother one way or another. More for the kids/grandkids I would assume.

This is a debate within the family. Me and an uncle are the only ones saying to go to the police regardless.

And I agree...the drugs are a HUGE issue. Both for the pain it can casue her, + the legality of stealing them for an addict.

You could also kidnap the lady and sell her into slavery to recoup some of the money. Then she will have a life time ahead of her of getting banged on a dirty mattress in an alleyway until she dies.

I'd say that's a fair punishment for fucking over your grandma.

If you don't do anything about it, she will do this to someone else. There has to be consequences for her actions or she will just do it again. Save another family from going through what you did. Even though this was probably an opportunity for her living so close to your grandma, if she gets away clean she will find someone else to victimize.

I see this as a victimless crime. If you and your uncle seek some sort of retribution, my advice is to do the exact same thing to someone else. Sort of a "pay it forward" if you will. I am sure Cole will be the most popular pre-schooler while on Oxycontin.

Use the drug issue as leverage to get the money back if possible, if not then get the police and a lawyer involved. This is the way I would personally handle it.

There is not an issue with your granny loaning someone she knows money, it is only an issue if the borrower does not have the intention of paying it back and taking advantage of the old lady. The drugs are a separate issue unless the borrower is a low life and taking advantage of your granny.

I hope this turns out well. Good luck.

Friends advice = the only advice.

I don't want to see Cole get addicted. I'd go with Hack's suggestion.

Unless Cole shows some self-discipline, doesn't use his supply and profits from it.
