Default Unschooling

Last night I was watching The Young Turks and they were commenting on a segment on "unschooling" from ABC's Good Morning America. Unschooling, from what I could gather, is basically a version of home-schooling where you don't actually teach your kids anything, but let them do whatever they want. It sounded ridiculous to me, bu have you guys ever heard of this?

I guess a couple of clips are found here: http://homeschoolbuzz.com/2010/04/ab...schooling.html

edit:

the whole segment is on the GMA website for Monday, then Tuesday, they interview the parents after tons of emails telling them they suck.

I haven't heard of it as a Movement or anything but have had a Few people I know that want to home school then really don't home school because it's too much work. Basically, the Kids sit there and do whatever....All day long.

It does bring up a Good point though. Up intill the last couple Centuries Schooling was for the upper class. You learned what you needed to for your trade and then did it.

I suppose that is a good point for a non-progressive. I think when EVERYONE is able to get an education, not just the upper class, we have progressed.

WGRD had these parents (Christine and Phil Yablonski) on the Free beer & Hot wings show this morning.
ABC edited this segment to make them look like bad parents.
The dad is a corporate nerd and the mom has a masters degree.
They care very much about having educated children, they just don't teach a particular curriculum,
instead they let the kids follow a more natural flow of what they learn.

I guess you would have had to hear the show to feel differently about this.

well, that's like, just your opinion, man...

We're talking about the same program right, the streaming internet show, the one that's not on TV, because I was at my in-laws one day and there was a show called The Young Turks on one of the nbc's, either MSNBC or CNBC. I was sorely disappointed.

I really like the Young Turks. Cenk Uygur has a pretty good head on his shoulders. He's a complete social liberal, but he's pretty fiscally conservative. He was actually a republican for most of his life.

Define education. Life experience is as valuable as any classroom when it comes to education, probably even more valuable.

I disagree with this.. I can guarantee you that life experience wont give you the reading and math skills you will need to do more than a manual labor job.

I guarantee you, that you would never let a surgeon near you that didn't have, and I'll quote myself, real life experience.
At what point can you read and add, 2nd maybe 3rd grade. That doesn't seem very impressive to me.

Agreed.

Someone can be very book smart but not have a lick of common sense, which is obviously gained from the "real life experience"

EDIT: However, I just watched that video, and that is a bunch of crap

I never said life experience wasn't valuable. When I say education I am referring to our system of public schooling that everyone can attend no matter who they are or how much their family earns.

If you had a choice

#1 surgeon with a degree and no life experience

#2 surgeon who never graduated from highschool but has worked side by side with surgeons for 20 plus years and has performed 100s of successful operations

I'll take # 2
