Default 96 f-350 - replace key ign. tumbler etc.

My bro in law has a ford that he used for his business but has been sitting for a year.

he lost the key and now needs to get in and replace the tumbler/key assmbly.

I have done this to my cj's more than once...is it pretty much on the same difficulty level??

generally, Fords are much easier...put the key in, turn it on, push the small button in that is accessable through a whole in the bottom of the column, pull ignition tumbler out, slide in new one (after making sure the key is in the "on" position and the button is depressed) and turn the key off...only tools needed are a small straight pick or screwdriver, and, of course...the key

without the key, your going to have much more fun...own a slide hammer?

might be better off trying to get the key code and have a key cut from that

Ford should be able to cut a key depending on when their year cut-off is. GM can't make keys before a certain year.

He will need to bring proof of ownership to the dealer to have the key made. Registration or title should work.

Also depends on whether or not the cylinder has ever been changed before. If it has, he would have to buy a new ignition cylinder and key.

finding they key is the best way. is a 96 the rounded body style?

if it is you will be screwed because of the factory seurity. and have to have it programmed by a locksmith that can do it or someone with a programmer.
i would call locksmith i think they charge around 80 for new keys and reprogram.

you can use a punch to basically force that reatining pin in, which will destroy the old tumbler, but should not damage the column at all...remove the plastic on the bottom of the column, find the tumbler release pin hole (bottom side directly under tumbler) and drive that pin in with a hammer and small punch...IIRC, when you get the pin pushed in far enough to break the lock bar, the face of the tumbeler will actually pop off, and the tumbler will seperate into a couple pieces, so you will then have to dig out whatever is left in the housing, may have to use a screwdriver to turn the rack into the "On" position, and then remove the rest

you will need to turn it into the "On" position anyway, to install the new tumbler
