Default Waverunners without titles or Trailer info - What could I do?

My neighbor is offering me two Wave Runners with trailer as payment for some work I did for him. He just moved out and needed to get rid of them...the problem is, he doesn't have the titles, registration or anything for the trailer (plates are missing). He has had them for at least 5 years as far as I know - but he lost all the paperwork in the move.

Can I register them and the trailer without anything to prove I own them?

The other problem is, he left the Wave Runners and trailer and told me to pick them up out of his yard and I don't know how to get a hold of him anymore.

The police need to do a VIN inspection-part one on the form for the trailer.

Watercraft ownership:

Call the SOS information line and ask them what forms are necessary, but I believe these will be it.

If there is a lien on the stuff then the bank will have to sign off before the title can be changed. It would be really nice if you had a bill of sale from the previous owner.

I bought a jet ski without a title about 10 years ago.

I had to get a surety bond (I think that's what it's called) and get the vin checked out by the popo.

Hombre, you avatar reminds me of the stickers we used to get out of the vending machines when we were kids 30 years ago.

I have nothing else to add to this thread...

You want to do a vin check for sure. Those things get stolen a bunch so be careful.

Just go to secretary of state. If you know the name of the person thats on the title, vin numbers of all three, all they will do is a vin check to make sure they arent stolen, then they give you the paperwork to file for an abandoned title. Buddy of mine just had to do this with an explorer he bought.

If possible have the owner go with you to SOS. I just had to go through this with an old dirtbike and they were assholes about it. I finally got them to do it without the other party, but it was a PITA.

get a bill of sale from the SOS, with some haggling they will let that go. If the trailer is stolen, just tell the SOS that it's a custom build and have it weighed at a certified scale, then they will give you a plate for it. Just bring in the weight slip.

I'm thinking you should write a "how to" book. Kind of a bathroom reader of sorts. Each chapter could be a different story of how you got one over on the man in different scenerios; taxes, tickets, throwing projectiles at moving vehicles in front of the highway patrol, etc. etc. The title of the book could be, "I beat the system and you can too!"

Hell, you could even have info-mercials on late night television. I mean, it's not like you couldn't set up a website or anything. Get a toll-free number for people to dial in with their credit card payment of $29.99 (+ $4.99 for shipping and handling).

You could be the next Billy Mays, boy!

I may have to do something along those lines with the trailer. The guys wife dropped off the titles for both wave runners and they were signed and dated. She said that she thinks the trailer is a non-titled registration and they can't find the registration paperwork.

Is there such a thing as a "non-titled registration" and if so, what do I need to get a plate for the trailer? (this might be a question for Hombre)

I'll be checking with the SOS too.

I know this is an old thread but I just wanted to summerize the results for anyone referencing this type of issue:

What CC wrote was exactly what was needed...

The SOS said I would just need the bill of sale, signed by the Seller. Also, I needed to take the trailer to a "Certified Scale" and have the trailer weighed and bring in the slip. They also asked for any numbers or a VIN that was on the trailer along with a description (i.e. ShoreLand'r 1998).

I just had to do this a few months ago and this is what I had to do for my boat as well.

Related to above statement: I went through this for 2 months trying to get a title for my boat. Watercrafts are treated differently than road vehicles. I was told by two diff offices that you can not just claim an abandonded title on a watercraft. On a side note, it took 2-3 days just to find out who issues surety bonds.

I think he covered that...

go to SOS, tell them the same story, if his name matches what in the computer for these you shoudl be good, as already mentioned.
Make sure you stress they were given to you for payment for something, and the po moved without giving you his new info or title work.
