Default Westboro Baptist Church protestes at military funeral

"Albert Snyder, whose son, Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, was killed in Iraq, learned Friday that a federal appeals court is requiring him to pay more than $16,000 in legal fees to the Westboro Baptist Church, a Christian fundamentalist group that demonstrates during military funerals to gain attention for its antigovernment, antihomosexual message. The group rallied at Matthew Snyder’s funeral in March 2006 in Westminster, Md., chanting antigay slogans and carrying signs such as “Thank God for dead soldiers,” says Albert Snyder’s attorney, Sean Summers...."

"...The Westboro group has been protesting at military members’ funerals for years. The church leader, Fred Phelps, preaches that American deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan are punishment for the nation’s tolerance of homosexuality. (He was among those banned from Britain last year for fostering hatred or extremism.) The protests have nothing to do with the fallen service members' sexual orientation, and the church says its protests are held within a “lawful distance” of the funerals.

More interesting that there is a whole church dedicated to protesting at military funerals, than the whole legal suit thing. Those people protesting just need to get shot a few times

I would love to send this guy some money to take his fight to the Supreme Court. He should not have to pay those crackpots a dime.

I agree with the 1st Amendment, even how crazy the speech is.

Regardless, there has to be some other law, or something that these people (Westboro people) can be sued for or charged with. Disturbing the peace or something.

Maybe emotional distress wasn't the best vessel to use as grounds, but if those assholes aren't enough to qualify for that, what is?

Free speech is free spech, but that is way over the line to grant those Westboro fuckheads the win.

Don't worry Bill O'Reilly has committed to paying this guy's court ordered judgement of the court costs. He, Bill O'Reilly, also posted the pictures of judges who did this on his show.

Where's the redistribution of wealth liberals on this......

I seem to recall some liberals on this board stating how they would pay to help others. It was a conservative that is actually doing something about this not just reporting on the story.

What an incredibly unnecessary and unrelated argument to start. The 'Them and us' BS is getting old. Anyway, I think we can all agree that this whole situation is garbage, and I'm glad to see someone step up to help him.

Not starting an arguement, just stating facts.

I was at a military funeral for Sgt. Matthew Webber from Stanwood, MI and these assholes said they were going to show up. The community rallied and set up a long line of school buses in front of the building so nobody could see their dumb ass when they showed up. The motorcycle group of honor guards set up a long line of guys holding the American Flags. These idiots never had a chance of getting their point acrossed and did not even stay long.

If that had been my son I would still be in jail for anyone even trying to protest!!!!!!

You got that right. I don't think it would even need to be my son, just being there and seeing that would turn me violent.

As stated earlier this guy is a nut job and does NOT represent the Christain community as a whole. Far right wing nut job and only calling himself a pastor does not make it true. This group is not what Christians are about. If anything he leans more toward the radical hatred that the left in this country portray. Fred Phelps can call himself a Christian but as a Christain myself... he is not what I would see in a man of God.
The funny thing in all this is that the left really eat this stuff up and believe it as truth.

I think we're getting off track here. In all honesty no religion is right, none is wrong, it's just good to have faith no matter in what/whom that faith is put in. anyway

This is about the freedom of speech right and where the lines are, personally I think those radical fu*kers waltzed way over the line and deserve every bad thing that happens to them.

Oh its ok to protest at dead kids funeral because we are sorry hes dead but it's his own fault for being part of a governemnt that tolerats gays. Fuck these stupid people, freedom of speech or not, that is in no way what the founding fathers had in mind when the bill of rights was written. If this protest had happend back then all the protesters would have been shot on the spot and left to hang...which should happen now

Again with the wbc. Just what they do this for, the attention.

Yes, they have the right to protest at the funerals using freedom of speech. Yes, the Patriot Guard and local citizens do what they can to protect/shield the families from the assclowns.

As for what you would do if you were there? Go. They advertise where they are going to be. Join the Patriot Guard, welcome home our soldiers, escort families to the cemeteries.

Just keep in mind, the original family who makes up about 70% of the wbc are lawyers. Part of the reason they do these things is so some tough guy will do something stupid and they can sue, making more money for the church. They hope someone will do something stupid, not only for the $, but the attention/publicity. Why do you think they use kids at the protests?

Want to beat them at their own game? Try doing what this young man did.

This guy Fred Phelps is not an honest practicing Christian. What he preaches is hatred and that is not what Christianity is about.
Islam is a false religion.

The good muslims should not get offended when they are being profiled at the airport as we all know who the terrorists were....muslims, if they were against it then they should denounce terrorism.
It bums me out that this guy calls himself a Christian and it puts a bad name on Christianity but I know the difference. That is not who I am or what I represent.
