Default 12 bolt carrier question

i just bought a 12 bolt rear end for my 84 chevy im not sure what the gears are can i use the carrier in the rear end and put a 4 11 on it?

what im confused on is a couple people told me that the rear end that i got is a series three carrier so i would need a ring spacer i was just wondering if it was true

I've never heard of anything like that.. My book only shows 1 Carrier and that 3.73 and up! There are 2 different types of Corp 12 bolt axles ( Car and Truck)( Car came in 5 lug and the truck axle came 5 & 6 lug also) There are different dif covers also and there not interechangable! Are you sure there were looking at the correct axle?

(I'm not sure if this applys ro not)?

More and likely you are going from a thick ring gear to a thin one, if this is so you might want to look around for the thick ring gear as it would be stronger! Do you know if you have the thick or the thin ring gear on the current setup as it sits (pic help) Have you call Randy's or DTS ? There might be stamped number / letters on the edge of ring gear that will help decoding the axle more

There are actually three different carriers covering 2.54-6.00 gear ratios (5.38 for truck axles).

A thick gear is not any stronger than a thin gear.

It came with a 3-series carrier from the factory, unless it has 4.11 gears.

You can get a thick gear to fit the 3-series carrier, or use a standard gear with a 4-series carrier. I would NOT recommend using a ring gear spacer.

That link is for a BPO axle, not the 8.875" 12-bolt, and is totally different than the axle being discussed in the thread.

Just replying to this! After rereading my post I mis typed " Should have been 5 lug not 6. How ever I made corrections

YC G6258086 12T 3.73 Standard open case fits 3.73 and up to 5.57 and use 6Gmt-411 (thin Gear) Ring and pinion (you will not have to use a spacer) you would also have to order the spide gears kit also.. Call there tech support 800-292-1031
