Default Priming a tj 4.0

Hey I just put a crate 4.0 in my 2002 tj wrangler and was wondering if anyone knows how you are supposed to prime the oil pump to that before starting the engine?

Remove the teeth from the cam gear of an old distributor, and spin it with a drill. I know '02 didn't have a distributor but the block opening and pump drive should be the same.

I've heard some people say you can use a big old flat blade screwdriver with no handle in a drill, but I'm not so sure I'd be confident trying that.

Did that the first time I built my 4.0 and it was a BAD move. 1st with it completely dry, it takes a LOT of cranking and even then it will not prime. It does not rotate fast enough. 2nd is that you are turning your crank, cam, and everything else in the block over dry as you do this. Spinning without oil is a BAD move.

I would not ever do this again!

After having to rebuild it again due to bad bearings only 10k later, i took out the cam gear and used a big flat screwdriver on a drill. worked perfectly.

Default priming oil pump

I had thought about doing that with the flat blade screwdriver since it looked like i could with the cam sensor pulled but I wasn't sure if it would work thanks for the info guys.

Just did my 98. Got the longest flat-blade screwdriver I could and cut the handle off and chucked it up in a drill. Worked like a charm.

did it once w/ an old dist. shaft, cut down and chucked in a drill. The second time, used a screwdriver.
Run it until you see oil flowing on top of the motor. You can even take the valve cover off and watch to make sure everything gets oiled.

get a junkyard distributor for 10 bucks. press the drive gear off, stick that in the hole and spin it over with a drill. your going to need a powerful corded drill. oil pumps take ALOT of power to turn and a wimpy 12 volt cordless won't spin it fast enough for very long.
