We've had just about all of them at one time or another as company tow rigs. Currently we have an 06 F350 with the 6.0 PS. Well, as of today it has been at the dealership for 5 days w/ 96K on the clock getting two injectors replaced...after they found that the FICM was shot. The thing threw 23 error codes when they first hooked it up! Close to a $2500 bill when all is said and done and the thing still has the new car smell (not really, but you get my point).

For my money, you can't do much better then a CTD. We had one in a 03 Dodge 2500 at the same time as we had an 05 Super Duty with a PS. The Dodge would just about double the fuel mileage of the Ford and ran/started smoother and pulled harder. I don't have any hangups on a particular brand since we use them all. So my opinion is more or less based on experience with all different makes. I would put a vote in for the Duramax too I guess. Just haven't driven quite as many miles with one compared to the other two. But they seem to run really well...almost too quiet to be a real diesel.

Like Ive said many times, I love my 02 F-250 with the 7.3. easily gets 18-20mpg, pulls good, nice comfy leather seats & fully loaded. It will be even better of a truck when I put in a 24v Cummins :)

Right now I am thinking of purchasing a 2000 F-350 Powerstroke dually 6 speed manual with 135,000 miles and 4x4. He is asking $12,500.

What do you think of that? And if I wanted to make it a single rear wheel it would be as easy as swapping the rear axle and bed right?

The best bet, IMO is a 7.3 Powerstroke.
Sure the Cummins last forever. But that's stock. Stock vs stock, the 7.3 has more power.
Can you build the living shit out of a Cummins? Sure. But it's not going to be a million mile motor anymore.

The Duramax has issues. Minor ones. I had an 05 crew and LOVED it. Got rid of it because of the payment cost, and the fact if something major broke, I'd be F'd hardcore, making a big payment on a truck I couldn't afford to fix.

The 6L is garbage.

ANY of the newer diesels 04+ just don't get the mileage to justify the cost. So if MPG is an issue you are looking at earlier diesels.
Again we are back to 6.5L Detroits, 7.3 IH's, and 12v Cummins.

And again, stock vs stock, the 7.3 has the best combo of reliability and power.

I have a 2003 GMC Z-71 with the 5.3 with 65,000 miles. I also happen to have a second G6 I might trade for with some cash added.

Sounds like a fair price, especially if it's clean. 130,000 miles is nothing, especially considering it's a '00. I had 275,000 miles on my '99 and with how great it still ran, you would have never guessed.

Yea I thought of that after I completed the poll. And yes I like that idea.

Where is the best place to find CTD's used?

you should go retro and get simple 6.9...lol

it says 185hp

but, i'd go with the 7.3 but thats just cause i like em regaurdless of mpg, way i see it its a big truck...so its probibly not gonna get good gas milage, if you want good mpg try a honda...that said i know very little about diesels, i just know if i was spending 50k i'd be getting exactly what i want, so good luck, and are you set on a truck???cause they have that CTR liberty with the amg diesel that looks pretty bad once ya lift em and whatnot...

I would keep an eye on craigslist. They always pop up. You might want to try cumminsforum.com as well or ebay.

By the way, a few months back there was a '02 crew cab Silverado on ebay with a fully built twin turbo 12v in it. It was a very cool setup.

I'll take the GM interior in a Ford truck with a Cummins under the hood, with a Toyota cruise control.
