Default Senator Jim Bunning. Hero or Dickhead?

http://blog.heritage.org/2010/03/02/...ject%E2%80%9D/

For those who don't know, he had the deciding vote to extend unemployment benefits.

He voted no again.

I think some need a "push" to try harder to get a job or settle for a job that they can get to put something on the table.

i know people who are on guberment assistance and all they do is fukc around and submit fake job inquires into to marvin. fuck em.

get a job with ember at walmart.

Hate to see honest folks getting hurt from this but I still feel at some point the blood letting needs to end. At some point a line needs to be drawn, there will always be collateral damage. The problem with Bunning is he seems to be doing this as a personal vendetta, but that also could be the media skewing reality.

That may very well be the case. I know the Republican Party in Kentucky was really having some problems with him last year and when there was talk within the state of him being challenged by a fellow Republican for his Senate seat, he threatened to sue the state branch of the party if they didn't support him over a challenger.

From a bunch of other stuff I have read regarding him over the past year and a half or so, it seems like he is turning into a spiteful old man.

All that being said, generally I think that he is right... if you are going to increase spending somewhere, you should have to show where that money is coming from. Unfortunately, he hasn't been consistent in his approach. He didn't stand in the way of Bush's prescription drug coverage expansion (he voted for it) and he voted for legislation previously that extended unemployment benefits without showing where the money was coming from. And I don't think that this is the best issue to take this stand on. Especially so late in the process. There is plenty of research that shows that unemployment benefits provide more quick economic stimulus than almost any program because the folks that receive these monies are the ones that need it the most. The majority of this money gets quickly spent on groceries, gas, rent, etc... Some goes towards paying down somebodies personal debt and of course there are those that might not necessarily need it and just sock it away in savings or buy frivolous items and there are some who abuse the system and buy drugs or go to the casino. But I'm willing to bet that the majority of the money goes to honest folks and it would really be foolish to hurt those who are in the most dire circumstances just out of spite.

I think he is a dickhead, but I also think he is right . 2 years is long enough to find some sort of employment/ income.

If you can't find a suitable job in 2 years, it's probably time to move somewhere you can or change your lifestyle/line of work. My $.02

Kind of split on this one. My Dad was unable to find another job in automotive design. He was on unemployment, actively seeking new jobs, and was unable to find any. He'll be 62 this year. Not exactly the age where you can easily switch things up, take classes or whatever to get a different job. Because of his heart and back he was able to go on Social Security Disability.

If you're single with low amounts of debt and responsibilities, it's pretty easy to change gears to do something else. When you have a house, married, kids, etc. it's not easy to go into more debt by starting an education for something else. Even if you go try and find a job at a retail outlet, you probably won't get a full time position and the hours you want.

There needs to be a limit for it, and there will always be people that will take advantage of the system. There needs to be better screening for it so people aren't doing that. There are people that truly need help, and no matter what they do they may not be able to find a job. Sooner or later the lifeline needs to be cut.

He may be a hero/dickhead for grandstanding the issue depending on where you stand, but to the extent he had the "deciding vote" where are the others who voted with him? Why is this now a Bunning issue?

It sounds like he's doing what is right. Dam hard to find the whole story tho.

Bunning’s argument is that the measure should be paid for because it would add to the current year’s massive federal budget deficit. He has proposed using unspent funds from last year’s $787 billion stimulus package, but Democrats objected.

.
Guys with your dad's background (I have his resume) are hurtin', their line of work (specifically in his area of expertise) is gone, and isn't EVER going to come back in numbers. His only choice would be heavy truck or aerospace. It's sad.

I think if more people didnt have the unemployment security blanket a lot of them would get off their ass and FIND work, not just look for what they have always done.

I am behind that asshole 100% even if he is doing it for the wrong reason.

I think he's wrong, but then again I'm currently underemployed (and in college again)after working 20 + (the last 10 in automotive mfg) years. 362 a week really is not much to a guy with a wife, 3 kids under age 8, and a house (bad choices on my part I guess). Maybe we could shed some government spending somewhere else as you actually have to have worked, at some point, to collect this "free ride". I usually do not say much about this (because I hate having to be on unemployment) but in my position this is the best I can do for now.
