it's about a '79 Scorpion Whip with a liquid cooled 470 motor from a ski-doo.

Along the same lines, where do you get parts for the old junk?

well thats a tough one. you can either find a set of 440ish twin pipes and get creative, or find a single 500 pipe and make a Y pipe off the motor. there's an equation for the size of expansion chamber needed for the size of the engine. i dont know where i found it. its been a very long time. whatever you do it will be custom. once you find a pipe(s) you will have to chop cut and weld until it fits.

i guess i'll have to look around and see what i can find. will i be able to tell by the temp gauge if it's in danger of burning up?

Cylinder head temp or exhaust temp is the only way to tell.... coolant temp is generally too slow, as my be cht.... look at you plugs, they should be chocolaty looking... definitely not white....

if runs hot, you have to add more fuel to compensate...

uh no. i'll make a call tomorrow to the "sled doctor" and see what he says about this.

i am pretty sure it will have no where near the power is could have with that exhaust.

check the plugs and see what they look like after riding it for a while. they should be a coffee with cream color. you will have to make carb adjustments (jetting) once you get the exhaust right.

this is probably the best route to go... assuming you plan to make it right... you cant use just any ole expansion chamber either, different designs do different things..
the length of the exhaust even makes a difference on how hot/how much power it will get...

I have a 76 Yamaha Enticer. Not sure its considered vintage, Guess it could be since it's older than yours :-p

My uncle has an old John Deere snowmobile.

There is a Snowmobile and Motorcycle Salvage yard in Mt. Pleasant that has TONS of crazy stuff.

Yes pipes do mean a lot but if jetted right anything will work. We have made several pipes and have never burnt down an old beater. Right now we are running half a stock pipe choked down to 11/2" on a 440 everest. We have also ran a psi pipe for an 800 ski doo on an enticer. As far as the plugs go we look for a golden brown.

the guy i got it from is a Scorpion fanatic. he still had his first sled, his parents bought it new in 74 or something. it was a scorpion of course. he also had the first model scorpion came out with displayed on a huge shelf in his shop. he built this sled (mine) to use as a personal machine and said he's ridden it for two seasons without any problems. he said he didn't build it to be fast, he built it to be reliable, that why he went with the water cooled bombardier motor. he had 8 scorpions in his garage and has a barn full of other old sleds.
