id pick 302 also because of the amount of parts available and you can buy used stuff from the mustang crowd pretty cheap

I would run a 305, just because I have built a few small block chevy's so I' familiar with them.

so basically its preference.

I'd take the Chevy 302 over the chevy 305, no questions asked.

from an anti ford guy, i say 302 would be the best bang for the buck if your gonna do a 305 for performance, sell it and to a 350, for a dd reliable go for it.

the biggest reasons for the 302 over the 305 is power per dollar, there is a ton of aftermarket for the 302 not the 305 (there is for the 350 also) a stock 302 vs 305 i would put my money on the 302, the 305 is kinda doggy for performance, (and yes i belive this, and have a 305 powered camaro in the fleet for atestment (that is getting a 350 swap soon enough)) i prefer my 3.8 v6 over the 305.

bottom line bang for buck is in the 302 and 350 not the 305. i mean if your gonna rebuild and the 350-305 are gonna cost the same to build then why not get a bit more pep?

this is a reply i got from a dragrace fourm
"a ford 302 is a 4.00 bore and 3.00 stroke motor. a chevy 305 is a 3.73 bore and 3.48 stroke motor. short block for short block a ford 302 is a better combo to do 400-500 hp N/A. But I would argue the chevy 305 is a better motor to run if you going to do forced induction. My reasons being: the block is far stronger, there is 5 bolts around each cylinder, the smaller bore actually promotes detonation resistance, the cylinder walls are very thick, easily can be billet capped and splayed"

302

IIRC the 305 is essentialy a 350 block with a smaller bore? Even still I'm pretty sure it's the same size externally as the 350. So you might as well go with the bigger engine.

The 302 is a smaller package, and this will help with coolng problems in CJ/YJ/etc., if that's what it's going in. It'll still be easier to cool regardless.

The distributor is easier to get to.

Enough aftermarket support to get a wide range of good, useable, power outputs, and plenty of places along the powercurve to put it. (it will like to rev slightly higher than a 305). But with the 302 in my Ranger, it's still got plenty of torque from, more or less, off idle.

To the last reply:

It's 6, 1/2 dozen or the other. The 302 has plenty of Forced air support and forged internals.

Detonation has to do with hot spots in the cylinder and a too high Compression Ratio. Either your clearances aren't correct (incorrect quench) or there a burr maybe somewhere in the combustion chamber. If the CR is too high it will get too hot and unstable from just the force of the piston compressing it, making it far more prone to explode before the spark plug tells it to.

Unless your going nuts with it the 302 will hold up fine to some pretty moderate power outputs, including boost. You would need forged stuff though if you go much past 1-3 psi or so, and it's lifespan would be somewhat shortened even at that.

So I'd look for a clean (hopefully healthy) 302 HO (or 5.0L rather). Roller cam and one of the more powerful factory versions that you can actually find in junkyards.

if your set on a Chevy engine, just go for the 350.

i actually do have a 5.0...well a few at my desposal... sadly tho their in mustangs, but thanks for the info, when i bought the car i was told it had a 351, got it home and took a closer look at it to find out it was a 302, so i was bummed, but from what i've seen on both fourms seems the 5.0 aint so bad...but still think i prefer my diesel 420...but thanks for the info

302 is a pretty decent motor and has a huge aftermarket, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
